Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Dev: We Focused On Fun, Past Games Took Themselves Too Seriously

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate brings the saga to London and the Victorian Age, a perfect setting for intrigues and mysteries.
However, it seems like the game will distance itself from the previous entries mainly for the addition of the so-called British humour, with Game Director Scott Phillips admitting in an interview with Metro GameCentral that sometimes Assassin’s Creed games took themselves too seriously.
Fun was something we definitely focused on in the story and in the gameplay. In the past, yes, I would say Assassin’s Creed has sometimes taken itself too seriously. So being part of that franchise what we wanted to do was maybe take it a little bit lighter. We found the writers spent a lot of time laughing when they did the read-throughs of the story, so it definitely has a lighter tone than some of the games of the past.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, a single player-only game, will introduce new features such as the ability to ride vehicles (carriages, of course) and enhanced tools at the disposal of sibling protagonists Jacob & Evie Frye.

Phillips described one of these, the voltaic bomb, which sounds quite useful indeed.
There’s one that’s in the demo, which is probably the most modern of the tools, the voltaic bomb. Which is essentially electricity, so you can drop it at your feet and it’ll spread out to multiple enemies and do damage to them while also stunning them. So it’s a great first strike or escape tool.
Guns are also going to play a more important role in Syndicate, although they will probably ruin all your stealth propositions if you choose to use them.
It’s a choice of stealth. You have your knives or your blade, which are your silent options, and then a gun if you’re okay with pulling in enemies from nearby – because that stimulus of hearing a gunshot goes quite far. If you fire off a gun in the middle of a street you’re gonna get some cops come attack you. If you fire it off in a gang stronghold you’re gonna get potentially 10 guys running towards your position to kill you. So it’s a choice you can make.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be available on October 23 worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while the PC version is expected to hit later but still before the year’s end.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate PC Late Release Date Explained

We’ve all known for some time that the PC version of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is going to release a few weeks after the it will on PS4 and on the Xbox One, on November 19th. It’s been an interesting connundrum that has sparked many a discussion. Ubisoft is explaining why that is.

Ubisoft is elucidating on why Assassin’s Creed Syndicate on PC is going to be released after console versions. Optimizations, they say.

Previously it’s been almost common place for the PC version of Assassin’s Creed games to be rather poorly optimized. They simply didn’t run very well at all. That’s supposedly changed with new policies in place at Ubisoft. There’s a concerted effort to change the poor image from the past.
“We have introduced several new improvements to our production pipeline and validation process, which allowed us to focus on polishing, stabilizing and optimizing the PC version very early on in the project. This has been one of the top priorities for the production team this year.”
    – Sam Kovalev, Studio Production Manager, Ubisoft Kiev

So then, they’re very much aware of the predicament that they’re in due to the previous Assassin’s Creed games, and while gamers have no reason to believe that this will be different, they are at least making an effort to communicate their intentions, to break away from the very poor release of Unity.
“The additional four weeks are for us to really bear down and finalize all of the polish and optimization, to make sure the game and all of its systems are stable when it launches, so it runs smoothly for all players starting on day one,”
Sam Kovalev, Studio Production Manager, Ubisoft Kiev
With all of the optimizations that are being made to the game, the recommended PC requirements are targeting a 30 FPS average at 1080P. This is not necessarily a groundbreaking performance target, but it should be considered the minimum for a decent experience. As we know, FPS is something that is experienced in a relative way. Some are sensitive, some are not. However, a constant 30 FPS is still said to help create a more cinematic experience nonetheless.
Be on the look out for more news as Syndicate nears its final release date. It’s coming to PS4 and Xbox One on October 23rd, and of course the PC on November 19th.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate ‘Horizon’ Trailer Arrives, Shows Dynamic London Landscape

Ubisoft has released a new trailer for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate that shows off the living world of Industrial London.

Newest Assassin’s Creed Syndicate trailer walks us through the majesty of London.

London is being recreated in very fine detail to include the hustle and bustle of the city life. A multitude of different character models are represented in the newest trailer as they walk around and enjoy life completely unaware of the fight to free the oppressed that’s going on around them.
Welcome to London, 1868. Here is a brief glimpse into the industrialized world Jacob and Evie will take by storm in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

Despite the somewhat lackluster performance of past games, Syndicate at least should share an appealing and accessible story set along the backdrop of another historical locale. As in the past, much care has been taken in bringing to life this time period as accurately as possible, with some creative liberties taken to enhance the story, of course.
You’ll control Jacob and Evie as you recruit a gang to help fight to free the oppressed working class. There are new weapons available, such as the kukri, and the game world itself will be quite large, accessible by carriage and even by train. You’ll be able to engage in all the assassin-like tom-foolery as you’ve enjoyed in the past.
Be on the look out for more news as Syndicate nears its final release date. It’s coming to PS4 and Xbox One on October 23rd, and on the PC shortly thereafter on November 19th.

[Updated] Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Gets New Walkthrough Showcasing Impressive Fighting Mechanics

[Update] IGN has released another version of the walkthrough, which features developer commentary. You can view the commentated video below, or watch the original without commentary further down.

IGN has released a new gameplay walkthrough for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, showcasing an alternate approach to completing a mission. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate allows players to take the fisticuffs route and fight their way across to reach their objective, a rather unusual treat for the strict stealthy requirements of previous titles. Offering players full freedom to tackle their missions any way they like, will surely spice things up, allowing variety, and most importantly eliminate some of the annoyance created when a certain mission must be approached in a specific way, causing failure when players don’t follow a specific strategy.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Gets Masterful Soundtrack Courtesy of Austin Wintory

The musical score behind a game, as with the most beautiful and atmospheric movies, can help create both the right feel and tone of a specific narrative, as well as to convey certain scenes, with the right amount of tension, emotion and even fright. Generating the right response and impact to the player, and elevating the experience to more than just an interactive medium, arousing emotions and making us feel that we are part of the story ourselves.

Ubisoft has released a behind-the-scenes video giving us a look at Grammy-nominee Austin Wintory as he records the Assassin’s Creed Syndicate score at the world-famous Abbey Road studios.

Creating the music for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was all about analyzing the characters

For Austin Wintory, the Grammy-nominated composer behind Journey, and several film projects, creating the music for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was all about analyzing the characters and the city of London. Especially the twin protagonists, Jacob and Evie Frye, and letting their personalities and attributes drive the direction and tone of the soundtrack. In an interview with UbiBlog, Austin talks about Syndicate’s theme, as well as his general process for creating music.

Austin Wintory explains how the whole process for composing the Assassin’s Creed Syndicate soundtrack begun:
“I was very fortunate that when the audio team for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, led by audio director Lydia Andrew, went hunting for a composer, they reached out to me. We’d never met before, so it was a bit of a cold call on their part. I was immediately excited at the prospect, though, as a long-time player of the franchise, but also as someone ever-hunting for new challenges. Lydia wanted to know what my interpretation of the world of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate might be, so I threw a curveball her way in the form of a sort of a twisted approach to 19th century chamber music, and to my astonishment she loved it. And so off we went!”

Wintory continues to discuss his approach to composing music for a game:
“I actually don’t have much of a routine or composing ritual. I try to vary my approach as much as possible, even including things like driving different routes to my studio each day. I figure if I get too complacent with the background details of my life, my composing efforts might similarly fall into a rut. So I just try to let the game guide me. Ultimately, each game is so different that if you just let it walk you down a path, you’re almost guaranteed to end up somewhere you’ve not been. And going places, musically, I’ve never been is probably the single aspect of this job I love the most.”

Talking about his inspiration behind the Assassin’s Creed Syndicate soundtrack, Wintory explains:
“The score could be attributed to two primary sources of inspiration: the personalities of Jacob and Evie, and the fascinating, contradictory world of Victorian London. With regard to the twins, they have this wonderful confidence, almost arrogance – particularly Jacob. Their mannerisms were a very crucial insight for the music, because it gave us permission to approach the score with a bit of fun and even sarcasm. For these two, a fight against virtually anyone does not represent a genuine life-or-death epic battle. It’s more like a cat playing with a mouse, and macabrely enjoying the dance. And that’s why you hear the waltzes! I rather obsessively channeled different styles of dance, with the waltz in particular, throughout the score to create that sense of ease – that Jacob and Evie are somehow, in their minds, above anyone who would dare cross them.”
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate comes out on Xbox One and PS4 on October 23 2015, with a PC release to follow on November 19. We will bring you any new information as soon as it becomes available.

Ubisoft Releases New Video Showcasing Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s Presence at Pax Prime 2015 with Some Impressive Cosplay

Ubisoft has released a new video showcasing Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s presence at PAX Prime 2015. Fans talk about their hands-on experience with the demo and show some very impressive cosplay outfits.

Creative director, Marc-Alexis Côté, explains that they did not want to bring Assassin’s Creed to this point, until they felt that the technology was there to enable them to recreate their vision, so as he states, they “had to wait for the technology to catch up”.

Ubisoft announced a couple of days ago that Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be getting a Jack The Ripper DLC, taking place 20 years after the period of Syndicate. The Jack The Ripper DLC will be part of the Season Pass and will se players joining forces with Inspector Frederick Abberline of Scotland Yard, to hunt down Jack The Ripper.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate comes out on Xbox One and PS4 on October 23 2015, with a PC release to follow on November 19. We will bring you any new information as soon as it becomes available.

We have watched plenty of gameplay footage thus far, that suggests that the latest iteration of the hugely successful franchise, runs and plays better than its predecessor. Assassin’s Creed Unity suffered from quite a few bugs upon its launch, causing performance issues on both consoles and PC. While many of the major problems were alleviated for the most part, fans of the series were turned off, something that Syndicate has to make up for, by providing a solid and immensely enticing experience from day one.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate feels faster and more entertaining than its predecessor

Most that have experienced the game, have expressed satisfaction, and assured that the game plays smoothly without any of the major hiccups that plagued Unity. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Getting a 500MB Day One Patch; Could it be the Game that Brings the Series Back to Form?

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is making its way to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this Friday, October 23 with the PC release to follow on November 19. The full game is said to take around 40GB and 43GB on the Xbox One and PS4 respectively. After a claim that Syndicate will have an 18GB Day One patch, Ubisoft’s Community Manager clarified on Reddit, that the day one patch “will be about 534MB on PS4 and about 520MB on Xbox One.”

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate feels more enjoyable and entertaining than Unity

Early reports from people having spent some time with the game, indicate that Syndicate runs pretty good, far better than its predecessor, and actually looks quite impressive given the immense size of the city of London. They also express that it’s a faster paced experience with a more advanced and enjoyable fighting system and an entertaining back story. The review embargo lifts on Wednesday, October 21, two days before the game’s release, something that goes to show that Ubisoft has some faith in the latest iteration of their popular franchise, and it could be the game to bring the series back to form.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate PS4 vs. Xbox One Frame-Rate Test; Shows Great Improvement over Unity

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate has been released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with its PC release to follow on November 19. Gathering quite good reviews that seem to acknowledge the latest iteration as a return to form for the long running franchise, as well as an improvement over last year’s Assassin’s Creed Unity both in story as well as gameplay. Most of the issues that plagued the latter are now gone, with Syndicate offering a smoother and more refined experience. DigitalFoundry has put the two new console versions to the test, discovering great improvement over Unity, with the PlayStation 4 version edging slightly.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate offers vastly improved performance over last year’s Unity on both consoles, with the PS4 version having a slight edge

    DigitalFoundry explains:
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate shows genuine improvement here. In Unity, we could see extended periods of gameplay where the 30fps target was nowhere in sight. Its successor shows huge improvement on both platforms, but it’s clear that the PlayStation 4 takes pole position. We have two videos below outlining the performance differential, concentrating on engine cut-scenes and gameplay. In the former, GPU load is significantly higher than it is during gameplay, and Xbox One’s less capable graphics hardware has more of an issue coping with the load, with sustained drops in performance in some areas, dipping beneath the 30fps threshold while PS4 holds firm. In areas where the Sony console does drop frames, Xbox One lags still further behind.

    Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Review

    • Developer/Publisher: Ubisoft Quebec/Ubisoft
    • Platform: PlayStation 4 ($/€ 59.99), Xbox One ($/€ 59.99), PC (from November 19, $/€ 59.99 on Steam)
    • PS4 copy reviewed, provided by publisher.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is one of the most historically inaccurate Assassin’s Creed games thus far. I have spent hours creeping through the darkened alleyways of London’s underbelly, climbing its iconic landmarks and even riding a few trains, and there is this massive glaring historically inaccuracy that ruins the game for everyone that’s visited the fair city of London.
It’s sunny. It’s sunny, like, most of the time.

Apart from this obviously terrible rendition of true British weather, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate offers one of the most intriguing, beautiful and immersive cities in video game history. After entering the city through a delightfully crowded train station, you’ll get to explore the heart one of the most technically advanced cities of its time.
Why is that so many games in this series start outside the city you’ll be spending most of your time? Some could say that it is so the central characters could be introduced to the city at the same time as the player. I would say it so they can have a big reveal after the tutorial.
Regardless, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is nothing but beautiful. Its industrial, smog filled London is introduced right at the start of the game and its jaw dropping good looking. The AnvilNext engine, for all of its legendary (and sometimes exaggerated) flaws, delivers an amazing, pretty and vibrant city.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate really wants you to fall in love with the city. London, while blighted with lots of oppressive industrialists, is breathtaking and bewildering. Syndicate is the first game in the series to realize 1:1 ratio on all the famous landmarks, and it really shows; although the boroughs aren’t as big as their real life counterparts, Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) and St Pauls Cathedral loom high over the city and are a wonder to see from both below and above. Exploring is encouraged, and side missions are now built to drop in and out of as you clamber of the tiled and glass roofs of central London. If you happen to spot a Templar leader to assassinate, children to liberate or loot to pinch, you can just drop down and do so, or continue on your way.
Climbing up the factories, townhouses and churches have never been easier than in Syndicate either with the addition of the grappling hook, which players get early in the game. Now you can leap from the street to the rooftops, and from ledge to ledge in mere seconds. Where once Assassin’s Creed dazzled its audiences with the mere ability to climb, new iterations of the series aren’t afraid to evolve beyond that.
It is very refreshing that this eight year series is moving forward, both figuratively and literally; the Frye twins are an entirely different breed from the earlier assassins.

For one, you can now play as two characters, and one of them is a woman, despite the apparent difficulty in animating women in previous Assassin’s Creed installments. Evie, the smarter of the duo, is focused on stealth while Jacob, the funnier of the two, is more violence inclined.
This is one of the most positive changes I have found in my time with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. While previous games inferred a inherent necessity for stealth, Syndicate doesn’t make you feel like you’ve lost just because you’ve been spotted. Getting to choose how you approach a given situation and being able to adapt in real time is much better than constantly running in the shadows and waiting every time a guard gets suspicious.

The sneaking component also enjoys the boosts from the Unity, with the ability to sneak and the refined cover that lets you to do them clumsily wander through the scenery until you stumble upon your target. Combat itself has been overhauled once again, and feels incredibly suited to the dirty and crowded streets of London Town.
No one is carrying swords anymore, while pistols haven’t effectively taken their place yet. Instead, this is the time when patrons of street brawls carried knuckle-dusters, sword canes and knives. The animation for combat represent this more brutal bare knuckled style with brutal, fluid boxing, and the controls are quickly messy to boot. Instead of timely waiting for opening before running your enemy through, you’ll now be hammering the attack button a lot as your respective twin beats the living daylight out of variously colored cockneys. While keeping an eye out for sneaky left hooks or an enemy on your flank to duck and dodge around. It’s a lot messier than what Assassin’s Creed fans may be used to, and it’s still just as easy to accomplish, but the feel of it matches the atmosphere of Syndicate quite fittingly.

The controls are as sticky as ever, unfortunately. Sometimes you’ll be gliding through the city with incredible momentum. Other times you’ll be trapped on a windowsill. It’s annoying at first, but after a little bit of practice you’ll start to learn what to expect from the game. The trickiest entry is the grappling hook, as you’ll wander around the street trying to aim the device at the right building. But again, after a while it’ll all start to flow together.
In terms of performance and glitches, the game is certainly improved from the horrors of Assassin’s Creed Unity. You might notice the occasional limb sitting through a wall or NPCs appearing from the ether, but nothing game breaking; also, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate runs smoothly most of the time, and even under the busiest conditions it remains smooth enough that the gameplay doesn’t suffer for it.
Moving onto the plot, I found the characters to be quite likeable. Jacob in particular is funny and a step away from the Assassin’s archetype initiate. He’s brazen, sarcastic, and not nearly as clever as he believes. He’ll agree to things for enjoyment over purpose and has a lazy attitude more often than not. Evie on the other hand is stern, short and amusing. She attempts to keep Jacob on a short leash and is extremely quick witted in putting him in his place.
The outer cast is also more varied and much more interesting than in previous entries. Maybe it’s because of my British upbringing, but this time around I recognized a lot more of the historical celebrities, such as Florence Nightingale, Charles Dickins and even good ol’Darwin.

The villain feels equally refreshing too. Although his scheme is comical at best, controlling everything from the street gangs to the political class, it does allow the Frye twins to explore everywhere in London, from its seedy underworld to the heights of British society. His personality and character are intelligently fleshed out, creating a powerfully voiced (and powerfully mustached) adversary who’s creepily confident to boot. While you don’t encounter him in the early game as he’s completely untouchable, you’ll find him lurking with his trusty teapot in cutscenes, becoming more and more distressed by the tiresome twins.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is a game that confidently steps away from its ancestors. Although the DNA is clearly still the same, the new and updated features are a treat to experiment with. You’ll explore London during the fabled Victorian era, with familiar sites to witness and famous icons to climb on. The graphics are great, the characters are more than the cut and dry quest givers they once were, and the combat has been lovingly revamped to match the tone of brawling in the streets of Victorian London.
It’s just a shame they couldn’t get the weather right.

Assassin’s Creed Unity And Syndicate PlayStation 4 Graphics Compared

Assassin’s Creed Unity’s technical shortcomings caused a great deal of embarrassment for Ubisoft and memes mocking the bugs were scattered across various forums. The game’s vast population density proved to be overly taxing on the current crop of consoles and ran poorly on PC due to shoddy optimization. Given this difficult lesson, Ubisoft has decided to scale back the number of NPCs to improve Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s performance. Now the game is finally out, YouTube channel Candyland decided to compare the graphics from the PlayStation 4 versions:
“We compare the graphics of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Unity on PS4. Syndicate runs much smoother than Assassin’s Creed Unity and seems to achieve a stable framerate by reducing some graphics options such as lower texture resolution, lower draw and detail distance as well as texture filtering, lower details overall, lower population density and variety. That sounds like a total downgrade, but it is not. The game still looks awesome and transports a lot of atmosphere.”
Overall, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is lacking in detail, and the entire world looks quite empty. However, the frame-rate has been improved by this and texture pop-in isn’t as noticeable. Additionally, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate introduces a dynamic day/night cycle while Unity only offered dynamic weather. While there are improvements, initial impressions show Assassin’s Creed Syndicate struggling to maintain a solid 30 frames-per-second. On this note, I’m interested to see the PC performance which will give a better indication of Ubisoft’s optimization compared to Unity.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate sales take a hit thanks to Unity

It looks like Ubisoft is still paying for its mistakes in 2014, as Assassin’s Creed Syndicate sales have been “clearly” impacted by the reputation of Assassin’s Creed Unity, the publisher recently admitted in a quarterly earnings call. However, given Syndicate’s positive reception so far, the publisher is expecting things to pick up in the following weeks, though we have yet to see the PC version of the game just yet.
Ubisoft’s Alain Martinez explained the situation during the call: “Clearly in our first week we were impacted by what happened with Assassin’s Creed Unity”, Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot then stepped in to say “We seem to experience the same sales curve as Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, versus Unity, Syndicate was down in the first week but nicely outperformed it in its second week as it benefited from positive word of mouth.”

Unity was a massive low point for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, the game launched in a barely playable state and PC owners had to wait even longer for proper performance fixes. However, this year things seem to have gone down much smoother, having played around six hours of Syndicate myself, I can say that it seems to be running much better than Unity did- on Xbox One at least.
The PC version of Syndicate hasn’t launched just yet, though it is due out before the end of the year. Hopefully we will see an improvement there too.
