    AMD and Dell Support Bioinformatics Studies at University of Warsaw in Poland

    AMD today unveiled innovation in heterogeneous high performance computing (HPC) by delivering more than 1.5 petaFLOPS of AMD FirePro S9150 server GPU performance for the Next Generation Sequencing Centre (NGSC) at the Centre of New Technologies, University of Warsaw in support of bioinformatics research related to next generation sequencing (NGS) studies. The new ORION cluster features 150 Dell PowerEdge R730 servers with two AMD FirePro S9150 server GPUs, for a total GPU peak of 1.52 petaFLOPS single precision and 0.76 petaFLOPS double precision performance. The energy-efficient cluster enables high speed and efficient calculations for genomic data, applicable to a range of genomics and bioinformatics studies, using a fast and power efficient OpenCL implementation for research applications.

    NGSC at the Centre of New Technologies, University of Warsaw, located in Warsaw, Poland, is a research facility for top-of-the-line genomics and bioinformatics studies in biology, medicine, diagnostics and therapy. The ORION cluster was designed and built for storing and processing of huge amount of data generated by the sequencers available in the Centre. NGSC conducts a variety of genomics projects in numerous collaborations by providing NGS technology to academia and industry. Researches from around the world are using this facility to perform NGS (e.g. genomic, metagenomic, transcriptomic, epigenetic) experiments that help them make fascinating research discoveries. Many of bioinformatics studies conducted at NGSC require large computational power, which is delivered by the ORION cluster.

    AMD: Virtual reality could mean rebirth for PC industry

    Sales of personal computers have been stagnating for a couple of years now for various reasons. Many industry executives and market observers believe that to revive the PC market, new programs that demand more resources than contemporary computers can provide are needed. Mark Papermaster, chief technology officer of Advanced Micro Devices, believes that virtual reality could be such technology.
    “There’s really what I think will be a rebirth of the PC industry and that is around virtual reality,” said Mr. Papermaster at the at Pacific Crest annual global technology leadership forum, reports Tech Trader Daily. “You have to experience it to understand what virtual reality means. If you have ever put on one of the newer headmount displays, you’ll see it’s going to be a new category and it needs PC-class compute and graphics to have that wonderful experience. If you underpower it, it’s not a great experience.”
    Initially virtual reality headsets and software will be aimed at gamers, which means that the market of VR-equipped systems will be a subset of the gaming PC market. Different industry observers express different expectations regarding sales of VR gear in 2016 – 2017. Some claim that Oculus VR, HTC and other suppliers of VR headsets will sell four to five million devices next year, but some believe that shipments of such products will hit 14 million units or even higher.

    AMD hopes that gamers, who will buy virtual reality headsets will also acquire high-end graphics cards, which means additional revenue and profits for the company. However, nobody knows for sure, how many VR devices will be sold in 2016 – 2017 and what impact they will have on the market.
    It is possible that virtual reality headsets will evolve rather quickly because today’s solutions hardly provide very immersive experience. If companies like Oculus Rift as well as game developers release radically better hardware and software every year within the next decade, they will catalyze gamers to upgrade their PCs frequently, which is a good news for AMD. However, it is unclear how significantly the evolution of VR hardware will help Advanced Micro Devices, who has been losing market share for years now.

    Não estou a ver a AMD ter razão nesta afirmação, não estou a ver os gamers num futuro proximo andarem a comprar capacetes e oculos de realidade virtual para jogar, acho que o verdadeiro gamer vai sempre preferir uma imersão de jogo num bom PC com um bom monitor e com um bom sistema de som do que essa mesma imersão com um par de oculos agarrados à cabeça.

    AMD Announces New Multiuser GPU Platform


    With the increasing trend of thin clients and lower-powered user machines, the cloud and virtual machines are taking on an ever more important role. In order to supply users with graphics and compute power even when they are using thin clients, Nvidia introduced their GRID hardware virtualization and cloud gaming service. Now AMD is jumping into the game with their own Multiuser GPU solution.

    For now, it looks like AMD is focusing on the hardware virtualization side of things. With the top end card, AMD is allowing up to 15 users per card. This means the GPU is being shared between up to 15 users. Of course, this is for lighter loads, with heavier loads requiring fewer and fewer simultaneous users. Virtualization will also be done on a hardware level, with users being able to access most of the usual features with OpenCL, OpenGL and DirectX acceleration.

    AMD’s announcement comes as Nvidia is also refreshing their platform with GRID 2.0. With Nvidia having already carved out their turf, it will be interesting to see how AMD will attempt to move in. Good news for AMD is that it appears that some FirePro cards will support Multiuser while GRID 2.0 requires different cards. This means for FirePro users, it may be an easy switch to enable multiple users. With true hardware virtualization support though, AMD may be able to snag some much needed marketshare before the market gets saturated.

    Darren Grasby is EMEA AMD President



    Stepping up
    AMD has decided that its Corporate Vice President Worldwide Component Channel manager Darren Grasby needs a promotion. Grasby is now President of EMEA AMD which is a promotion even if the job title is not as long..

    Grasby has been with AMD for a while and the company decided to tap him on the shoulder to run its EMEA business. This is rather important role because its market segmentation makes it one of the more challenging.
    Dr. Lisa Su, president and chief executive officer at AMD said:
    “EMEA is a key region with a broad set of important customers, partners and markets for AMD. Darren is a proven leader who is ideally suited to drive deeper customer, partner, and stakeholder relationships across EMEA as a part of helping AMD accomplish our long-term business goals.     AMD hasn’t had many killer products in the last few years. It still has a few things to offer in the GPU side of the business but Carrizo was less of a success than the company hoped.
    AMD has pinned all hopes on a Holy Grail product codenamed ZEN but the company is still rather far away from being selling it. It will take a few more tough quarters before it really gets better but we wish Grasby a lot of luck in his new job.

    Lawsuit alleges AMD misled buyers on Bulldozer core count

    AMD's Bulldozer CPU architecture has had a troubled history. Thanks to its unusual design, the company's top-end CPUs had difficulty competing with Intel's latest and greatest—and its troubles may not be over yet. Legal News Wire reports that a class-action lawsuit has been filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California's San Jose division, alleging that AMD falsely advertised those CPUs as having more cores than they actually do.
    The heart of the matter is the Bulldozer architecture itself. Bulldozer modules combine two integer cores with a single floating-point unit and a dedicated cache module. Multiple modules are then combined to form the CPU. According to Tony Dickey, who filed the suit on behalf of himself and other affected users, the integer cores can't operate independently. Therefore, the suit alleges, the CPUs suffer from "material performance degradation" and cannot process eight instructions simultaneously.
    Dickey's suit says the average consumer doesn't have the technical expertise to understand AMD's CPU architecture and the company didn't convey accurate specifications. Because of this knowledge gap, the suit alleges the company tricked "tens of thousands of consumers" into buying CPUs that can't perform like a "true eight-core" processor could.
    The suit accuses AMD of violating two California laws and a whole host of other counts, including "false advertising, fraud, breach of express warrant, negligent misrepresentation and unjust enrichment." He's suing for statutory and punitive damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, and other relief as the court deems necessary.

    AMD Issues Official Statement Regarding Bulldozer Core Count Suit

    Overnight we received an official statement from AMD about the class action lawsuit filed against the chip maker alleging the company engaged in fraud and deceptive marketing when it claimed that Bulldozer processors had eight cores.
    “We believe our marketing accurately reflects the capabilities of the “Bulldozer” architecture which, when implemented in an 8 core AMD FX processor is capable of running 8 instructions concurrently.” – AMD
    News about the suit (Dickey v. Advanced Micro Devices Inc) broke last week and it appears that the suit alleges that Bulldozer only truly has four cores instead of eight since the cores share certain resources and can’t run eight instructions simultaneously. Extreme Tech published an in-depth look at how Bulldozer works way back in 2011 and found that the additional cores improved performance and were able to handle more than four instructions simultaneously. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out!

    AMD Promotes Ruth Cotter And ​Robert Gama

    AMD today announced the promotion of Ruth Cotter (44) to senior vice president of Human Resources, Corporate Communications, and Investor Relations reporting to President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. In this expanded role, Cotter is responsible for overseeing all aspects of these three corporate functions and driving cross-functional alignment to help the company achieve its business objectives.     AMD takes small percent of GPU share back



    Slow recovery
    AMD managed to take a tiny part of the discrete market share back from Nvidia.

    Last quarter Nvidia held 81.9 percent of the market while AMD had 18.0 percent. This quarter AMD increased its market share by 0.8 percent to 18.8 leaving Nvidia down by just as much.
    In Q3 last year AMD had 28.4 percent of the market and Nvidia had 71.5 percent. This indicates that AMD lost heavily to Nvidia in the least year. This is not something that we didn’t already know and some internal sources blame the lack of competition in the performance and mainstream levels.
    Jon Peddie Research JPR also said that the total AIB shipments decreased to 12.0 million units this quarter. The market is getting slower. With introduction of Fury and R9 300 parts AMD's quarter-to-quarter total desktop AIB unit shipments increased 33.3%.Nvidia's quarter-to-quarter unit shipments increased 26.4%.


    The change from year to year decreased by 3.8% compared to last year. This is not necessarily a bad thing. There is another trend that leads to a higher average selling price as most of people who are buying discrete GPUs are playing on them. The super low end part of the market is dying and this has been happening for a few years now.



    Our sources within Add in Board partners have told Fudzilla that average selling prices of GPUs in 2015 have been the highest ever. The AIB discrete board market has decreased from 114 million units in 1999 at its peak. In 2013 65 million shipped. Most likely 2015 might be even smaller.

    AMD Joins Leading Businesses To Protect Climate

    AMD has joined the American Business Act on Climate Pledge in a coordination with US corporate climate leaders and the White House Office of Public Engagement. AMD along with the other participating business signatories have pledged their support for a positive, action-oriented outcome at the United Nations Climate Summit negotiations in Paris (Nov 30 - Dec 10), and have created forward-looking corporate goals to help improve climate protection.

    In 2015, AMD reached several sustainability milestones. The company announced successful completion of five year environmental goals (2009-2014), achieving 24 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from non-manufacturing sites, 31 percent reduction in global energy use since 2009 and 32 percent reduction in transportation emissions.

    AMD king of the Thin Clients



    Has half the market

    It is not all bad in the AMD camp, apparently it controls half the chip market for thin clients.

    For those who came in late, thin clients are quasi-intelligent terminals which draw most of their processing power from servers. At various times in IT history they have been touted as the next big thing and always disappointed. With the rise of the cloud, thin clients are again being touted as important again.
    Now AMD has announced that it has achieved a number one market share position for thin clients based on its thin-client shipments.
    According to its unit sales to thin client customers last year, AMD has more than half of that market, with 53 percent market share.
    AMD has its Embedded G-Series which can offer reasonable graphics in single- or multi-display configurations in the enterprise.
    Recent design wins with HP, Fujitsu, and Samsung validate that AMD APUs provide compelling value with horsepower for data movement, encryption/decryption of central server data, and even video encode/decode for video conferencing or multimedia streaming.
    AMD’s corporate vice president and general manager Scott Aylor, said that AMD Embedded G-Series SoC couples high performance compute and graphics capability in a highly integrated low power design.
    “These processors provide compelling performance per dollar per watt, strong security, sophisticated power management, and superior graphics performance. The product lineup includes an unparalleled range of pin- and software-compatible offerings, helping to address multiple needs of our customers.”
    He said that the surge of innovation in the desktop virtualization market has created new opportunities for powerful thin clients that are now capable of executing demanding tasks including computer-aided design and 3D modeling.
    Customers are also using AMD thin client solutions in financial and government services, call centers, kiosks, and hospitals, “smart” monitors and other multi-user, virtualised installations, he said.
    The AMD G-Series SoC also features enhanced security for enterprise IT operations, enabling security between the thin client and the server, and allowing only software approved by an enterprise’s IT organization to run on the thin client device. It also supports enhanced power management technology to help manage energy costs and environmental impact across large deployments.

    AMD: Xbox One and PS4 To See Record High Sales Next Year – Predicts End of Cycle for Current Gen Consoles by 2019

    AMD is the provider of the APUS inside the consoles by both manufacturers and is one of the most knowledgeable entities in the supply chain. We previously revealed its plans to supply chips for next generation consoles and the company has now stated on more than one occasion that it expects the current generation consoles to have a life cycle till 2019. It has also stated that it expects 2016 to see more console sales as compared to 2015, something that should help boost revenue for the chip maker.

    AMD: Consoles to have even more sales next year, current cycle will probably end in 2019

    Sales of the custom APU inside the Xbox One and PS4 make up a good chunk of AMD’s revenue, something investors are very much interested in. Fortunately, this means that we get to hear about AMD’s thoughts on the console roadmaps in investor and technology conferences. A few weeks back, we exclusively reported that AMD is preparing to supply chips for next generation consoles with 5x the performance per watt and increased focus on VR in 2018. This time-frame fits in perfectly with recent comments by company officials.
    The Raymond James Technology Conference was recently held (on 8th December) and AMD’s CTO Devinder Kumar made some interesting comments regarding the life cycle of the consoles as well as the expected sales next year:
    Yeah I think the launch of these products happened in 20 — late 2013. So if you count 2013 by ’13, ’14, ’15 we are about to enter ’16. If you go to the past years and look at — if you say it’s a seven year cycle then ’16 is kind of right in the middle there. And the thing to remember is based on the information that has been provided let’s take the play station game consoles, the ramp of this product and the performance of this and from an overall standpoint is the best compared to any prior generation of play station, right.     Counting 2013, there area total of 7 years in the expected life span of the Xbox One and PS4. This means that once we transition to 2016, only 3 years remain before the new consoles arrive. It is worth noting that the cycle could end before this as well (as early as 2017) as noted by AMD’s CEO, Lisa Lu at the 18th Annual Credit Suisse Technology Conference:

    Yes, so I think the way to think about gaming is the game console cycle is usually anywhere from five to seven years or usually in the — on the longer side and this cycle has been really good. I think it’s been really good both, Sony and Microsoft have really marketed well through the value proposition.
    The peak of game consoles are probably anywhere from the third to fourth year. We believe this year game console units are up relative to last year. From our visibility next year will be up relative to this year and it’s really about continuing to satisfy that amidst is higher for more gaming. So, I view it as a continued good market for AMD.     As we can see, according to AMD’s projections, console sales should peak out next year. It is also interesting to note that the company expects a traditional 7 year cycle for the current generation of consoles, even though the PC Gaming industry is getting increasingly powerful hardware, resulting in an ever-growing gap between between the consoles and an average gaming PC. That said, it is unlikely that we will see the cycle cut short since it would be contrary to the profit motive of both companies. It was originally thought that a PS4 with more powerful hardware was a possibility thanks to x86 hardware, since AMD does not have any plans (currently) to supply new chips to Sony, this remains unlikely as well.
    A more energy efficient APU (and PS4 version), however, with the same approximate power could be on the table. Die shrinks and process maturity could result in a much more cooler and slimmer PS4, but will have approximately the same horsepower as the original. Naturally, the same holds true for Xbox One as well – although the company has not officially discussed any such plans so far. In any case, the next year should be a good year for console sales – and will probably constitute the heyday for this generation. That reminds me, the Xbox One and PS4 bundles are back at their $299 pricing for Christmas over at Amazons folks.

    AMD Claims SYSmark Benchmark is Biased


    In the technology industry, reviewers rely on accredited benchmarks to easily distinguish between the latest hardware and provide scores which help quantify the difference in performance. Generally, the majority of respected websites, and YouTube channels opt for the same software. For example, 3DMark is an essential tool to gauge GPU performance at various resolutions. Companies tend to fixate on benchmark numbers because if gives the consumer a direct comparison between their product and the nearest competitors. Today, AMD released a scathing video about SYSmark and claims the benchmark is biased, and inaccurate.
    During the video, John Hampton, director of computer client products and Tony Salinas, engineering manager at AMD, said “SYSmark does not use everyday real world workloads”. In the software, an Intel i5 CPU attained a score of 987, while a “comparable AMD platform powered by an FX processor” managed 659. This is a delta of 50%. In comparison, PC Mark 8 accelerated scores are 4199 on the Intel platform and 3908 on AMD, a difference of 7%. According to AMD, there’s an excessive amount of stress being placed on the CPU and doesn’t accurately measure other key system components. PC Mark 8 provides a more well-rounded indication of real world performance.





    To clarify this, AMD created a set of custom scripts and measured the start to end end time in the office suite and reached a time stamp. The Intel platform took 61 seconds to complete the task while the AMD system finished in 64 seconds. This is a delta of 6-7% which coincides with PC Mark 8’s accelerated results. Obviously, these are bold claims made by AMD and some might argue it’s just sour grapes for creating an inferior product. However, the data does suggest there’s a smaller gap than people might expect in real world scenarios. Despite this, SYSmark is recording the CPU’s performance so it’s bound to show a marked difference compared to a more general benchmark.
