    Grip [PC, PS4]

Grip – Intense Unreal Engine 4 Futuristic Combat Racing Inspired by Rollcage

Grip is a futuristic combat racing game that has competitors battle across diverse landscapes of distant worlds. Inspired by the Rollcage games of 1999 and 2000, Grip takes that heady cocktail of awesome weaponry and insane speed to a whole new level.

Grip is a futuristic combat racing game inspired by the Rollcage games from 1999 and 2000

    Grip Features:

    Intense Action

Hit speeds of up to 700 km/h while driving on floors, walls and ceilings – anything you can get your tyres on to keep the hammer down. And these brutes just want to keep on going, with GRIP’s specialised vehicle design and physics, flipping the car over no longer means game over.
    Exotic Planets

Race on a variety of planets. From hostile, icy worlds to foreign, non-terrestrial cities, GRIP’s locations will be different to anything you’ve raced through before. With destructible structures around each track to use against your opponents, along with a variety of possible routes, you have to use your wits as well as your skill to win.
    Badass Rides

Choose from a roster of armoured cars, manufactured by different companies from around the galaxy. Each car has different specs – some swift and agile, others brutish and heavily armed. Then go on to customize your ride’s appearance and performance with well-earned upgrades.
    Beefy Weapons

Use an array of power-ups and weapons, ranging from missiles and guns, to laid traps and plasma cannons. We want to create the most bombastic weapons ever seen in a game like this, and with this we welcome input from the community. You help us design them, and we’ll bring them to life.
    Killer Tunes

Race to a thumping soundtrack including Drum ‘n, Trance, Breaks and Techno. And if somehow you don’t like any of those genres, the game can be customised to play any music you like from your own personal library. Your game, experienced your way.
    Multiplayer Mayem

Oh yes. The feature that you, us, and everyone else around here has been waiting for – local and online multiplayer. Share the experience of that crazed, heat of battle there in the room with your friends with split-screen, or launch an all-out assault for supremacy online on the global leaderboards with the wider Grip community.

    Game Modes

Career: Work your way through the Interplanetary Racing League, unlocking new tracks, cars and upgrades for your ride.
Arcade: Play a single race on any track you’ve unlocked with any car available and choose to include race modifiers like time of day, weather, weapons used and other options
Time Trial: Record your fastest time and race against it’s ghost, or race the ghost car of anyone on the leaderboard who’s recorded their run.

Multiplayer: Race over LAN or local split-screen, or take on the world by joining a race online. Matches can have a combination of human and AI players.
Arena (possible mode via Kickstarter stretch goal): Get dropped into an arena with multiple opponents, fighting to grab weapon pick-ups to decimate your foes. Last car standing, wins.
Grip is currently under developement for the PC and PS4 by Caged Element, with a Kickstarter campaign to launch during Summer 2015.

Other notable Unreal Engine 4 projects include the gorgeous Absention, a new survival horror title inspired by true survival horror greats such as Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness and Silent Hill so fans can expect a mixture of mental challenge, intense gameplay, and immersive environments.
Unreal Engine forum member ‘koola‘ has recently released two screenshots from his latest project, that looked just absolutely mind-blowing, and now he has released two more images from the map and a video showcasing fully procedural ground textures. Koola mentions that big rocks come from the Epic Kite Demo.
Koola has previously delivered some hyper realistic real-time architectural visualizations using Unreal Engine 4. Taking advantage of both the power and accessibility of UE4, the results of his work have wowed colleagues and has garnered attention from the international press and the Unreal team at Epic. Earlier this year Koola became the very first recipient of the inaugural Unreal Dev Grants program, a financial development fund designed to incentivize and reward innovative projects designed in Unreal Engine 4.
Witness the making of the first-person experience ADR1FT, Three One Zero’s narrative-driven survival game that takes the genre to breathless levels. CGCloud has created an incredibly impressive new project, LondonLoft, using the Unreal Engine 4. The astounding wlakthrough can be watched here.
Acclaimed game-development studio Dontnod and publisher Focus Home Interactive, announced Vampyr, a new role-playing game powered by Unreal Engine 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Ad Infinitum is a first-person survival horror adventure set in a surreal world during WWI. It is built on the Unreal Engine 4 and is currently under development for the PC.
Downward is a beautiful first person parkour based, scenery open-world adventure set during the Middle Ages, after that the events depicted in the Book of Revelation of St. John took their course. ARK: Survival Evolved, is a multiplayer first person survival game coming to Early Access in June 2015, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions planned for 2016.
We will bring you any new information about Grip’ and other Unreal Engine 4 projects as soon as it becomes available

GRIP Dev: XB1 Port Coming Shortly After Launch; Anything Other Than 60 FPS Would Be Daft

We have reported a few times already on GRIP, the Unreal Engine 4 powered combat racer currently on a Kickstarter campaign for funding. The game, a spiritual successor to Rollcage, is being produced by indie studio Caged Element; we reached out to them in order to bring you some fresh information on this exciting project.

Today, we’re offering you a small preview of our interview. Many gamers have questioned the team’s initial choice of platforms (PC and PlayStation 4), so we inquired on the matter and got a pretty definitive answer: GRIP is coming to Xbox One as well, even if a bit later.
We can only budget for one console for initial release and we felt that Playstation was the best fit since Rollcage’s heritage is firmly in the Playstation camp. However, we have every intention of releasing for Xbox One and other platforms a few months after launch.
We would love to be able to offer crossplay between all formats. However, there are a number of technical hurdles needed to overcome before we can say for certain.
Crossplay between all formats? Sounds like they have heard my cry from a couple of days ago! Hopefully they can pull it off. Moving on, they have clarified how important the 60FPS target is for the console versions of GRIP.

We’re aiming to deliver a fast paced, adrenaline fuelled combat racer… anything less that 60fps would be daft. Yes, that is absolutely our goal.
Hopefully that won’t translate in significant graphics compromises on console – the game looks absolutely gorgeous already. Speaking of, when prompted about the chance of DX12 support in the game, they replied as follows:
We’ll be exploiting anything and everything to make this the fastest, most beautiful looking combat racer ever made.
Come back tomorrow to read the full chat we had with Caged Element.

Chatting With Creators – GRIP Edition

Yesterday, we teased you with some tidbits from our interview with Caged Element, the small indie studio behind GRIP. The Rollcage-inspired combat racer made with Unreal Engine 4 is seeking development funds on Kickstarter and we took the opportunity to chat with Producer/Designer David Perryman to bring you fresh and exclusive information on GRIP. Enjoy!

    • Why do you think developers aren’t that interested in this kind of games anymore?
    • I think that combat racers are a niche genre these days. The interest is certainly big enough for a small indie developer to make but there’s not enough for the bigger Publishers… and therefore developers. Especially at the quality level we’re aiming for here. We feel we can do it because we have help from UE4 and Rob and I have done this before, we’ve both spent literally years understanding how this sort of game works. We don’t need to re-write the rulebook here, it’s not as much of a daunting task as it might be for a developer coming at it fresh.

    • How important will combat be as opposed to driving in GRIP? What are the odds that someone just focused on driving may win the race?
    • If you just focused on racing and didn’t take any of the speed boosts or turbos? You’d be winning the race around 20% of the time, assuming you’re ok at it. If you’re excellent at it, you might push those odds up to 60%. Grip will reward skill: the more you play the better you get. However, what’s the point of that – you have an arsenal of juicy weapons at your disposal and this is not Gran Turismo. And the truly memorable moments will come when you’re utilising your weapons to best effect. Like in the ‘Dance of Destruction’ cinematic trailer we’ve just released: timing it just right and taking out a building, boosting through a rain of debris, leaving your competitors to deal with the rubble… it’s moments like that that are remembered forever.

    • How many tracks you anticipate to be in the final version of the game?
    • We’ve budgeted for 12 tracks over 4 Planets. If we reach one of the Backer Choice stretch goals then the community will have the chance to vote whether they want an extra planet. This will come with 3 new tracks.

    • How many cars will be in a track concurrently? Will the number be the same in single and multiplayer modes?
    • We’re aiming for 10 cars per race. That would be the same for single player or multiplayer. Obviously split screen will be limited to 4 player cars and 6 AI cars. We are considering whether to implement split screen and online play at the same time, so that two people in the same room can play their friends over the internet at the same time.

    • GRIP will release on PC and PlayStation 4 first, with other platforms possibly following later. Why did you choose PlayStation 4 instead of Xbox One for now? Also, do you plan to enable crossplay between PC and PS4?
    • We can only budget for one console for initial release and we felt that Playstation was the best fit since Rollcage’s heritage is firmly in the Playstation camp. However, we have every intention of releasing for Xbox One and other platforms a few months after launch.
We would love to be able to offer crossplay between all formats. However, there are a number of technical hurdles needed to overcome before we can say for certain.

    • Are you aiming for 60FPS on console? Some racing fans believe that it’s fundamental to the experience, what about you?
    • We’re aiming to deliver a fast paced, adrenaline fueled combat racer… anything less that 60fps would be daft. Yes, that is absolutely our goal.

    • Unreal Engine 4 introduced experimental DX12 support with its 3.9 release. Are you planning to exploit that performance boost by using DX12 in GRIP?
    • We’ll be exploiting anything and everything to make this the fastest, most beautiful looking combat racer ever made.

    • What happens if the Kickstarter campaign does not reach its minimum goal? How will that affect your plans for the game?
    • It’ll be a real shame if we don’t reach minimum goal. But we have every hope that we’ll build momentum into the final week. I guess we’ll just have to see. The progress has been unusual so far, so it’s hard to gauge these things. But we’re doing all we can, and working with some great people to help get it the exposure it deserves. The community is right behind us and helping spread the word as much as they can and it all helps. If we don’t reach our minimum, then we’ll have given it a good go through this route, but we’ll have some hard decisions to make. All I can say is that I really hope our fans come with us on the journey, whatever other avenues we may try.

    • Thank you for your time, and good luck with the campaign.

UE4 Combat Racing Game GRIP Launches On Steam Early Access, Launch Trailer Released

Futuristic combat racing games were all the rage a few years ago thanks to titles such as WipeOut and Rollcage, but nowadays it’s hard to find new games that manage to capture the spirit of these classic titles. Things, however, are going to change soon, thanks to GRIP, a new combat racing game currently in development by Caged Element.

GRIP has been in development for some time, but now those who cannot wait to get their hands on the game have the chance to purchase it on Steam Early Access and see for themselves if GRIP can bring about a new era of combat racing games. An Early Access trailer has also been released, and you can check it out right below.

Just like the best games of the past, GRIP will come with a high-speed racing experience, with vehicles being able to hit speeds of up to 700 kmph, plenty of power-ups and weapons, tracks set on exotic planets and more. If you’re a fan of the already mentioned Rollcage, you’ll surely find plenty to like in GRIP.

GRIP is bringing old-school style combat racing back with a bang. Inspired by the Rollcage games and developed by some of the original team, GRIP is a true tribute to the explosive fun had in a past gaming era.
A few months ago we had the chance to chat with GRIP’s producer and designer David Perryman, who has revealed that GRIP will also come to Xbox One, but at a later date.
GRIP is currently available on Steam Early Access. The game will also be released on PlayStation 4, with the Xbox One release coming at a later date.
