    Ys Net has released a new in-engine video for Shenmue III, showcasing Ryo and Shenhua arrive at the Lake of the Lantern Bugs after their long journey. Entranced, they watch the gentle flight of the lantern bugs upon the mirage-like oasis.




    Shenmue III uses the Unreal Engine 4, and with its Kickstarter campaign having surpassed $5M (of a $2M goal) with 51 hours left, it has been a smashing success.

    Koji Igarashi’s Kickstarter campaign for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night became Kickstaster’s most funded video game when its campaign ended at $5,545,991. Shenmue 3′ Kickstarter has overtaken Bloodstained and has become the highest funded video game in Kickstarter’s history. Shenmue III uses the Unreal Engine 4, and with its Kickstarter campaign having surpassed $6M (of a $2M goal) it has been a smashing success.

    Shenmue’s Hazuki Residence Recreated in Unreal Engine 4

    Kid Nocon has released a video showcasing the Hazuki residence from Shenmue recreated in Unreal Engine 4, which can be viewed below:




    Shenmue III uses the Unreal Engine 4, and with its Kickstarter campaign having surpassed $6M (of a $2M goal) it has been a smashing success. Whether the assets used by Kid Nocon will be used in Shenmue 3, is unknown, but we can safely assume that the end result will likely look much better than this, as both the talent behind the project and the incredible potential of the Unreal Engine 4 could produce some astounding results.

    Other notable Unreal Engine 4 projects include the gorgeous Absention, a new survival horror title inspired by true survival horror greats such as Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness and Silent Hill so fans can expect a mixture of mental challenge, intense gameplay, and immersive environments.
    Unreal Engine forum member ‘koola‘ has recently released two screenshots from his latest project, that looked just absolutely mind-blowing, and now he has released two more images from the map and a video showcasing fully procedural ground textures. Koola mentions that big rocks come from the Epic Kite Demo.
    Koola has previously delivered some hyper realistic real-time architectural visualizations using Unreal Engine 4. Taking advantage of both the power and accessibility of UE4, the results of his work have wowed colleagues and has garnered attention from the international press and the Unreal team at Epic. Earlier this year Koola became the very first recipient of the inaugural Unreal Dev Grants program, a financial development fund designed to incentivize and reward innovative projects designed in Unreal Engine 4.
    Witness the making of the first-person experience ADR1FT, Three One Zero’s narrative-driven survival game that takes the genre to breathless levels. CGCloud has created an incredibly impressive new project, LondonLoft, using the Unreal Engine 4. The astounding wlakthrough can be watched here.
    Acclaimed game-development studio Dontnod and publisher Focus Home Interactive, announced Vampyr, a new role-playing game powered by Unreal Engine 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Ad Infinitum is a first-person survival horror adventure set in a surreal world during WWI. It is built on the Unreal Engine 4 and is currently under development for the PC.
    Downward is a beautiful first person parkour based, scenery open-world adventure set during the Middle Ages, after that the events depicted in the Book of Revelation of St. John took their course. ARK: Survival Evolved, is a multiplayer first person survival game coming to Early Access in June 2015, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions planned for 2016.

    Shenmue III Gets Progress Update By Yu Suzuki

    At E3 2015, Yu Suzuki and Sony Computer Entertainment surprised everyone when Shenmue III’s crowdfunding campaign was announced during the PlayStation conference.

    The hugely anticipated third entry in the Shenmue series went on to gather $6,333,295 from Kickstarter, becoming the most funded videogame ever on Kickstarter by a wide margin, and sixth most funded project when considering all categories. Truthfully, Shenmue I & II had a much bigger budget at the time, but now development tools are far cheaper and thanks to Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, Yu Suzuki will be able to create Shenmue III even with this budget.
    After over a month of silence, a new Kickstarter update sheds some light on the development progress of Shenmue III by interviewing Suzuki himself:

    Q: How is the production progress going?
    A:.. Please take a look at this diagram So far, we have finished the composition, story, planning and the game flow We will be advancing to the next development step soon.
    Q: Can you tell us more about the composition stage?
    A:.. Shenmue III is based on the 11 chapters created 17 years ago, and each chapter is set in different regions For example, the first chapter was set in Yokosuka, second was set in Hong Kong and so on However, we can not finish with just one chapter in one region, so I had to restructure the story to fit within the scope of Shenmue III.
    Q: What is the story stage about?
    A: We had to rethink the storyline to make a more coherent flow, such as writing additional stories and making other changes.




    Q:? What about the planning stage What is going on in this part?
    A:. Since we now know the amount of the funding from the Kickstarter campaign, we can plan the overall budget for development So I have mapped out the game project to fit that budget scope at this stage.
    Q: After the plan is written and ready, what happens in game flow stage?
    A:. It is about placing various cut scenes, events, battles, and quests in order. We have just finished this stage a few days ago, and we will be working on the actual game development now.
    Q: What other plans will be upcoming?
    A:. I will promise that I will be updating you about the progress of the development at least once a month. This is what we have for now.
    Q: Is there anything big coming up on your schedule?
    A:. I am thinking about seeing the 2015 Tokyo Game Show which will be held in September Also, I am planning to travel to China this October to both attend a game show called CHUAPP × 2015, and also to do some location scouting for Shenmue III’s development.
    Q: Lastly, do you have any stories you could give that occurred during development so far?
    A:… One night, I went to a Thai restaurant with the development team after work At that restaurant, a man approached me and asked to shake hands He said he was a fan, and we had a brief talk He also happened to be in the game industry and we began to hit it off. We talked some more to find out he really knew his job, and on top of that, he was an exceptionally good person. I was so impressed, I asked him to help with the development. I could not help but feel Shenmue’s unique gravity to bring interesting things together.
    Shenmue III is being developed for PC and PlayStation 4, with a tentative release date of December 2017. Stay tuned for more on the title.

    Sega Supporting Shenmue 3; Interacting With Its Creator Yu Suzuki

    It appears that Sega has finally recognized the existence of Shenmue 3, and even talks about supporting the game from Yu Suzuki.

    The Shenmue IP is still owned by Sega, who published the first two Shenmue titles back in 1999 and 2001. Back in October, Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki talked about Sega’s involvement, and whether the rights to the IP were transferred to him. “It’s difficult to explain. I am the one who created Shenmue, so Sega allows me to take decisions for the game. They trust me because I know more about the workings of the game more than anyone else”, said Suzuki during an interview with Dualshockers.
    Sega has been quiet about their IP for a long time, but in an interview with Marketingweek last month, Sega Europe’s head of marketing Jon Rooke, said that the company is “exploring ways” to re-release the first two Shenmue games.
    “Yes, we want to innovate and back smartphones and virtual reality, but our key purpose is to go back to what the brand used to stand for and I think the buzz around Shenmue 3 shows that people love our legacy,”
    “Sega was an innovator, the Dreamcast was offering online gaming as early as 1998. But perhaps back then we were pushing boundaries a little too soon. Nowadays we know what we’re good at and the strategy is to be more gradual. Over the next few years, we want to use engaging content and marketing to remind the public why they fell in love with Sega in the first place.”
    Important IP for Sega

    In a recent interview with Gamebusiness.jp, Sega’s former president Hideki Okamura, again mentioned Shenmue. According Okamura, Shenmue is an important IP too many, not just to Sega. Thanks to Shenmue Dojo for the translations.




    It Appears SCE is backing up the development of Shenmue 3. Shenmue is a Sega IP, are there any plans to support this effort?
    Shenmue is of course an important IP, not only to Sega, but also to the many games it has influenced. It was the first of its kind in the go anywhere, do anything open world style games. On top of that Mr. Suzuki had a very strong desire to make Shenmue 3.
    Okamura adds that the company interacting with Suzuki at the very moment, and they will continue supporting him concerning Shenmue 3.
    “Of course Sega is interacting with Mr. Suzuki even now. We will continue supporting him concerning Shenmue 3 as well”
    Okamura added: “Craftsmanship is something that should be done by those who really want to create, and this has Yu Suzuki as the main developer.”
    It looks like Sega has truly recognized the Shenmue IP once again, and even seems to support the game. Let’s hope that the publisher indeed finds a way to re-release the original two Shenmue titles.

    Shenmue 3 Will Get Ragdoll Reaction Thanks To Latest Stretch Goal


    Shenmue 3 just reached another stretch goal by going over $6.5M. It’s a rather important one, since it will add proper ragdoll reaction to the game’s combat system.
    While the Kickstarter campaign provided Yu Suzuki and his team with $6,333,295 in pledges (a new record for the video games category, which allowed Suzuki-san to enter the Guinness World Records), there is an ongoing “slacker backer” campaign allowing folks to pledge via PayPal. This campaign already provided an additional $170K and all of it counts towards new stretch goals.

    The next one, though, is quite far right now. At $7 million, Ys Net will add “AI Battling” to Shenmue 3, while the $7.5 stretch goal would allow them to include the “High Ground Battle system”.
    Suzuki previously stated that the full Shenmue 3 open world would require crowdfunding of $10 million, though he will make the best game possible with the available money.
    Shenmue 3, tentatively scheduled for December 2017, is being developed with Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 and will release on PC and PlayStation 4 platforms.

    Shenmue 3 Website Redesigned; Developer Shares New Year’s Letter – “noses to the grindstone”

    The official Shenmue 3 website has been redesigned, and developer YSNet has shared a New Year’s message for 2016.

    Shenmue 3’s new website can be found right here, and looks a lot cleaner than it did before. To start of the new year, Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki and his team posted a New Year’s letter for the fans, which reads as follows:
    Happy New Year!
    Thanks to Shenmue fans everywhere, 2015 saw the start of Shenmue III. 2016 will be a year with noses to the grindstone to make the next installment of Shenmue worthy of the expectations you have entrusted with us. We would like to again ask you for your support and cooperation for all that lay ahead this year.

    Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter campaign was announced at Sony’s E3 press conference with a $2 million target. That goal was reached within 8 hours. After the Kickstarter campaign ended, the game harvested around $6.2 million – a new record for videogame crowd funding. Those who could not participate in the Shenmue III Kickstarter, are still able to support the game by making a donation via Paypal. All funding collected through Paypal will be added to the Kickstarter total for the game’s development.

    Shenmue 3 Development Is A “Heavy Responsibility”, Creator Loves “Challenging Creation”

    Shenmue 3 is definitely one of the more anticipated games launching in the future, and expectations are incredibly high. Not surprising, considering how long fans of the series have had to wait just to know that the series wasn’t completely dead. Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki knows this quite well and has recently shared more on his feelings recently.

    A few days ago Yu Suzuki has been presented with Guinness certificates for the impressive Shenmue 3 crowdfunding record. The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign managed to gather $1 million in just 1 hour and 44 minutes, smashing the previous record held by the platform game Yooka-Laylee. With such high expectations, Yu Suzuki feels like the Shenmue 3 development is a heavy responsibility, especially with the game now being literally supported by fans.
    Mr. Suzuki has also shared more on his development vision. The Shenmue creator stated that he doesn’t like to be beaten by others, always preferring to find an original way and an individual creation, as it draws more attention. These statements aren’t surprising at all, considering how ahead of the times was the original Shenmue back in 1999.

    Shenmue III Shown Off in New Screen


    Beautiful skies, clear water, green grass – Shenmue has come an awfully long way since we last saw it in 2002 on the original Xbox.
    And for those of us that have been waiting for those long 13 years, it’s hard to put into words just how important the above screenshot really is.
    It’s one of the first updated images to show off improvements made since that big reveal at Sony’s E3 press conference last year.
    This was one of a few images shown today at a Magic Monaco press conference.

    Even though it’s only a work in progress shot, it clearly doesn’t quite look like the trailblazer that it once was, visually. That wasn’t really expected, and it’s not really necessary.
    Instead, just the fact that Ryo Hazuki and company are making their return, that progress is being made and that it looks as good as it does will be enough to settle any slight concerns.
    There’s still a lot that needs to be answered in terms of pure gameplay, but those things will be revealed over the coming days, weeks and months.
    Meanwhile, there’s still no mention of if we’ll ever be able to get hold of the classic titles on consoles or officially on PC.

    Shenmue III New Work-In-Progress Screenshots Showcase Environments

    It’s been some time since we last heard of Shenmue III, the new entry of the series created by Yu Suzuki now in development for PlayStation 4 and PC. Back in January, a new work-in-progress screenshot has been shared online, and today a few other screenshots have been made available.

    The new Shenmue III screenshots, which have been shared by the official PlayStation Twitter profile, showcase some of the game’s environments. You can check out how colorful Shenmue III’s environments look right below.








    The new batch of work-in-progress screenshots isn’t the only Shenmue III material that has surfaced online. Today, Ys Net has shown more of the game during the Monaco Anime Games International Conference such as videos showcasing weather effects, a fishing spot and one of the game’s main themes have been shown during the events.

    Yu Suzuki himself was also present during the event, and he shared more on what he would like to include in the game. Mr. Suzuki confirmed that main character Ryo won’t look all that differently from past entries of the series, as his face won’t change in the new game. Mr. Suzuki also stated that he likes Chai and wants to bring him back as a character in Shenmue and that he wants more strategy and interaction in the game’s battles.
    Around one month ago, Yu Suzuki shared more on his feelings about developing a new entry of the Shenmue series.     Shenmue III Story Is 95% Done, No Plans To Show The Game During E3 2016

    A few days ago, the highly anticipated Shenmue III has been shown during the Monaco Anime Games International Conference, with series creator Yu Suzuki being present during the event. French website GameBlog has managed to interview both Mr. Suzuki and co-producer Cédric Biscay shortly after the event, and both have revealed some interesting new details on the game and on the future of the series.

    According to Yu Suzuki, the Shenmue III story is 95% done, but the none of the in-game content is actually finished. The game’s story will take place right after the ending of the second game, and the game will retain the gameplay style of its predecessors, with updates to many of the gameplay mechanics that have become Shenmue staples. Yu Suzuki also revealed that he would like to implement new QTE events featuring elements of the FREE battle system, but he’s not sure he’ll have enough time to do so.

    Mr. Suzuki has also revealed that Shenmue III will cover chapter 5 and 6 of the Shenmue story in its entirety, which includes 11 chapters. Mr. Suzuki also added that he doesn’t feel like three more games are needed to tell the full story, as he would like to rearrange things to reach the end soon. He specifically says that he doesn’t want to reach a sixth episode.
    Co-producer Cédric Biscay has revealed one very interesting detail on the future of the series, stating that there could be more games in the future if Shenmue III manages to achieve moderate success. Unfortunately, it seems like it’s going to take a while to see the game in action, as the team currently has no plans to show Shenmue III during E3 2016.
    Shenmue III is now in development on PlayStation 4 and PC.
