Microsoft Sends Lucky Windows Insiders Lumia 950, Display Dock To Provide Critical Continuum Feedback

Being an "Insider" for one of Microsoft's various products and services is already a rewarding experience -- you get early access to whatever Microsoft's cooking up and can help shape how it turns out through your feedback. It's a win-win situation, and to show its appreciation to those who provided a lot of feedback on Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft is rewarding its most active Insider participants with one of its new flagship Lumia handsets, plus a some extras.

Microsoft is taking its Windows 10 Mobile Insider program to the hardware level and it's bringing along some participants for the ride. Those chosen can select between a Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL (check out Marco's Lumia 950 review here), which Microsoft will send free of charge. The bundle will also include Microsoft's Display Dock and an Actiontec wireless adapter.

Those chosen will receive a letter from Microsoft.

"Congratulations! Based on your active participation in the Windows Insider Program and response to the survey you recently submitted, you've been selected to receive hardware to use as part of the Windows Insider Program to provide feedback that helps shape the future of Windows 10 Mobile," Microsoft states in its letter.

It's not clear what kind of activity level Microsoft was looking for, though a Reddit user who posted a copy of the letter he received said he was "pretty active" and that he submitted "a least a few dozen direct feedback things, both problems and suggestions."

Windows 10 Mobile became official with the launch of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, though it still hasn't been released in standalone form for other handsets. There's a lot riding on the success of Windows 10 Mobile, so it's no surprise that Microsoft would choose to incentivize its most active feedback contributors.

Microsoft seems particularly interested in how users view Continuum, a standout feature of Windows 10 Mobile that allows apps to be used in a desktop-like environment on their PCs.

Microsoft Rolls Out Firmware Update For Lumia 950/950 XL

Microsoft announced the first firmware update for the recently released Lumia 950 and 950 XL Windows 10-based smartphones. European users were among the first to see the new update for the Microsoft devices, but U.S. customers may have to wait a bit before they see it.
The new firmware, version 01078.00027.15506.020xx, features several improvements to the phone’s stability, performance, SD card support, automatic display brightness, camera issues and a fix for a 4K video problem that was causing stripes to appear while playing a video.
These improvements are a welcomed announcement, but U.S. carriers seem to be slow to the punch, as we cannot confirm that AT&T or T-Mobile (the only two companies that currently support the Lumia 950 and 950 XL domestically) have deployed the patch as of yet. Microsoft noted that the availability of the firmware update “may depend on your network service provider,” ominously shifting responsibility to the carriers, which as of right now, seem to be lagging behind.

AT&T Won’t Stand In Way Of Windows 10 Mobile Updates For Lumia Smartphones

Earlier this month, we reported that Microsoft was doing its best to avoid having to deal with slowpoke wireless carriers when it comes to delivering OS updates for Lumia smartphones. Instead of going through a carrier validation process, Microsoft on its own pushed build Windows 10 Build 10586.29 to Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL smartphones. In essence, this makes the operating system update process for Windows 10 Mobile more akin to iOS than what we’ve seen with the fragmented nature of Android.
The ability to bypass carriers means that Microsoft can deliver more timely security and feature updates to customers without first having to receive approval from the “big four” wireless carriers in the United States. While Windows Phone diehards championed this move, many wondered if the carriers would actually sit on the sidelines and let Microsoft have free reign over the update process.

One carrier, AT&T, has responded via a posting on its own Windows Phone discussion forum. The wireless company confirmed that it is respecting Microsoft’s wishes when it comes to OS updates and will not interfere:
The 950 will be receiving monthly WaaS (Windows as a Service) updates, and the latest one released on December 8th (Build Version 10.0.10586.29.) These updates are not certified by AT&T, and will be delivered via Microsoft over-the-air. A Wi-Fi connection is required. From the App List, scroll down and tap Settings > Phone Update > Check for Update.
While this is definitely good news when it comes to OS updates, it still doesn’t change anything with regards to device firmware updates. So if you’ve got a buggy Microsoft hardware on your hands, you’re still at the whim of your wireless carrier to get the update out to you in a timely fashion.

Microsoft Gives Lumia 950 And Lumia 950 XL Owners Free Year of Office 365 Personal

If you’re the owner of a new Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL Windows 10 Mobile smartphone, Microsoft is just about to make your day a little bit brighter. The company announced that it will soon be giving customers a free one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal as a gift for purchasing its latest flagship smartphones.
In case you were wondering, the Office 365 Personal subscription is worth $70, so this is generous offer from Microsoft. To take advantage of the free subscription, you will have to navigate to the Lumia Offers app on your smartphone, and choose the “1-year Office 365” selection from the available offers. Within five days of singing up, Microsoft will send you promotional code (which can only be used once) to unlock your free one-year subscription, which also just so happens to include 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage.

For U.S, customers, the offer extends to Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL purchases made between November 20th, 2015 and June 30th, 2016. And when you think about it, this offer should come in handy, as Microsoft will require all Windows 10 Mobile smartphone running Continuum to have an Office 365 subscription to enable Office document editing beginning April 1st, 2016.
It should be noted that the offer, for now, is only available in the United States, United Kingston, France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway.
This isn’t the first time that Microsoft has provided freebies to customers that have bought its Windows 10 Mobile flagships. Just before the Lumia 950 XL launched late last year, Microsoft gave those that pre-ordered the smartphone a free Display Dock, which retails for $99.

    Windows 10 Mobile 10586.71 Now Available for Non-Insider Lumia 950, 950 XL and 550

A few days after its release to Insiders, Microsoft has started rolling out Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.71 to non-Insider users today.
Earlier today: Windows 10 Mobile to Begin Rolling Out on February 29

Windows 10 Mobile 10586.71 rolls out to non-Insiders:

Windows 10 Mobile preview build 10586.71 was released to the Fast ring and later to the Slow ring. After Insiders having tested the preview, the build is now rolling out to public users who own the Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL or Lumia 550. The preview isn’t yet available for the users of Windows Phone devices who have long been waiting for the mobile operating system to be made available for their devices.
Here is the complete changelog of Windows 10 Mobile 10586.71 cumulative update for non-Insiders:
    Advertisements

    • Reliability and stability improvements.
    • Bluetooth connectivity improvements with car and other accessories.
    • Microsoft Edge improvements to PDF rendering and navigation.
    • Improvements for battery usage with Iris Recognition for Windows Hello.
    • Update system improvements to fix a situation where some users had phone software updates and app downloads stuck at 0% for extended time periods.
    • Change to update system to now require phone to be plugged into a charger when downloading and preparing phone software updates.
    • Fix for a problem causing erroneous low storage prompts for some users when trying to download phone software updates.
    • Fix for a problem that caused erroneous prompts of Outlook account settings being out-of-date for some users, although account settings had not been changed.
    • Fix for a problem that caused some phones to get stuck on BitLocker Recovery screen after a reset.

Unlike previous cumulative updates, this one is expected to be a lot smoother as Microsoft has tirelessly worked to iron out any performance issues. If you are a non-Insider user of Lumia 950, 950 XL or Lumia 550, go to Settings > Update & security > Phone update > Check for updates to get the latest Windows 10 Mobile 10586.71 cumulative update.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Review: The Windows 10 Mobile Flagship

Lumia 950 XL Introduction and Specifications

Forget almost everything you’ve read about the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL up to this point. We know that’s a bold statement, but bear with us here. Save for the phone’s specifications, if there’s one thing we’ve learned evaluating the 950 XL over the last few weeks it’s that virtually everything from the OS to the camera app has been changed or updated very recently, and it has affected battery life, responsiveness, and browsing, among many other things. Information published about the Lumia 950 XL that's any more than a couple of weeks old is simply outdated.

It seems that Microsoft was tweaking a large number of elements and features in preparation for Windows 10 Mobile’s “official” release on a wide range of devices. Sure, Windows 10 came pre-installed on the Lumia 950 series, but there have been major changes over the phones’ relatively short lifespan.

In any case, we’ve been using the Lumia 950 XL as our daily driver for a few weeks now, in place of a Lumia 1520, which had already been updated to Windows 10. We think we’ve gotten a very good feel for the phone and how it compares to previous-gen devices, and have our thoughts detailed on the pages ahead -- along with a slew of benchmarks, of course. If you’re one of the select few contemplating a move to Windows 10 Mobile read on to find out if the Lumia 950 XL is right for you...

If you're a regular HotHardware reader, you're no doubt familiar with the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and its smaller cousin, the Lumia 950 (reviewed here). For those of you that may not be familiar with Microsoft's latest smartphones, the video above offers a good summary of their main features and design. We'll have many more details on the pages ahead, though.

The Lumia 950 XL's spec table is quite telling. This phone is packing some of the latest hardware available, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC clocked at up to 2GHz, 3GB of RAM, USB 3.1, a QHD AMOLED display, and a bevy of sensors. The particular device we'll be showing you here also has a dual-SIM setup, which could come in handy if you're a frequent traveler. With dual-SIMs, you're able to select which SIM to use on a per-call or per-text basis, presumably to prevent roaming or other charges carries are known for tacking on when outside of your designated service area.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Accessory Bundle
Before we dig into the Lumia 950 XL, here's a look at what comes bundled with the phone. We're testing the dual-SIM variant here, but the bundle is similar for the single-SIM version. Included in the box -- along with the phone, of course -- is a basic lit pack, a USB-A to USB-C charge / sync cable, and a USB-C charger, with hard-wired cable. Unlike many other smartphones that include a a wall-wart with a USB port for charging, the charger included with the 950 XL is all one piece.
