    XBOX Game Preview service

Starbound boldly goes to Xbox One's Game Preview service

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Chucklefish's space explore-em-up, ever since I got into the beta and discovered you could play Ode to Joy on a violin while following your friends around a strange alien planet.

So the announcement that's it's going to be coming to Xbox One fills me with a bit of joy. Starbound is coming to Xbox owners via the magic of Microsoft's new Game Preview service, allowing Xbox One owners to buy early access copies of games and see them mature into fully fledged games.

I hate early access but Starbound have been pretty good at keeping progress moving on the PC so there's no reason to believe it won't keep on top of this Xbox One version too, in fact there's an extra team working on the Xbox One edition.

In a statement on their website, community manager Molly Carroll talk about the reasons behind launching on Game Preview, and talk about potential plans to come to other consoles. I'm crossing my fingers for a PS Vita version.

'Starbound has benefited massively from the community’s feedback since we launched on Steam Early Access, with so many of you helping our little team squash bugs and create an overall better sandbox game (thank you! <3). We believe Game Preview provides the best opportunity for us to make Starbound an amazing experience for console gamers as well.

This won’t distract us from Starbound’s continued development for PC, of course, as we’ll have an additional team working on the console version of the game. Ultimately, our goal is to launch Starbound in Game Preview and fine-tune the game for the best possible console experience. Once we reach Starbound 1.0, we’ll start working our way towards porting the game to additional consoles.'

Microsoft will use Xbox early access to test first-party games

Xbox Game Preview is Microsoft's own spin-off of Steam's early access, a program that lets preview members beta test unreleased Xbox One games for a fee. Although the Xbox early access initiative was originally for indie games, Microsoft has since revealed it will use the program's community-driven approach to help develop and test its own first-party exclusives.

"First party will be using Game Preview for our games," Microsoft's head of publishing Shannon Loftis told GameInformer. "It's not 100 percent. It's very much developer choice, but it is definitely an option."

"We are curating that program very much with an eye for making sure that the games are high-quality games. A lot of the issues we've seen with the folks that tried this sort of service earlier are things that we've been able to learn from," Loftis says, nodding toward Steam's cluttered Early Access platform. "There is a little bit of extrapolation that the gamer has to make in order to guess that the end product is good. So far, nothing has backfired as far as gamer reception, but we are being very cautious."

From Loftis' words it looks like the Xbox Game Preview platform isn't just another money-making scheme to turn out unfinished games that might end up in limbo. Microsoft apparently plans to incrementally curate the games over a period of time armed with the might of community-driven support (feedback, testing and, of course, money).

The pilot program has gained quite a bit of momentum since it was announced at E3 2015. Loftis says that game developers have flocked in droves to the idea, leading to a "mad rush" in the dev community. Indie devs everywhere are eager to have their games featured on one of the first major wide-scale early access programs for games consoles.

This news aligns perfectly with Xbox boss Phil Spencer's strategy on focusing more on first-party games. What better way to ensure quality experiences than letting gamers beta test and give feedback every step of the way? In this light early access on the Xbox One could be a tremendous boon for the Redmond-based console-maker.

To date Xbox One Game Preview has games like The Long Dark and the renown space sim Elite: Dangerous, with Day Z and Sheltered coming in the pipeline. Right now the feature is only available for members of the Xbox One's invite-only preview program. If you happen to know someone who's in be sure to ask them for a quick invite.

Get in soon: the Xbox One Preview Program is near-capacity

The Xbox One Preview Program is one of the best ways to try out new software updates and upcoming features for the console before they hit the general public. The Preview Program is invite-only, unlike the Windows Insider Program, but in the past it hasn't been particularly difficult to join.

This is set to change, though, as the Program is apparently so popular that it has reached a "near-capacity level", which has led Microsoft to scale back on the number of invites it hands out. The company is very thankful for the amount of interest in the program, but they need to "optimize for testing" by restricting the amount of new members.
If you want to join the Xbox One Preview Program, you might want to find an invite soon before they all dry up.
One of the main features that Preview Program members can currently test is Xbox 360 backwards compatibility, a feature that allows you to play your existing Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One through emulation. This feature will roll out to the public in November with a wide variety of games supported from day one.
Windows 10 will also be launching on the Xbox One in November, and it will be available first to those in the Preview Program. Members can expect to receive a Windows 10 preview build in the coming months, with Microsoft planning on testing the OS update for at least a two months before its release.

Original Borderlands Receiving Xbox One Backwards Compatibility

The original Borderlands has made it on the backwards compatibility list for the Xbox One. If you’re part of the Xbox One Preview Program then you can experience the wide world of Pandora once again in its original glory.

The stable of backwards compatible Xbox One games has grown by one.

When Borderlands came out in 2009 it gave us a tremendously fun and witty futuristic loot-driven FPS with a continual profusion of content on the cell-shaded world of Pandora. Many people thoroughly enjoyed many hundreds (if not thousands) of hours in Borderlands, and 2K wants to help you continue enjoy it in the future.
“We are proud to support Xbox One Backward Compatibility by bringing the complete, original Borderlands to Xbox One, including all downloadable content. We know many of our fans have put in dozens, even hundreds, of hours exploring the world of Pandora on their Xbox 360, and now they can continue their adventures on Xbox One.”
    – Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K Games.

Thus far it seems that the backwards compatibility feature hasn’t quite been appreciated as much as perhaps Microsoft has wanted. The performance of games being played from within the Xbox 360 virtual machine tend towards poorer performance, though not always. Re-living those memories from older games can be a joy, certainly, but because these games have to specifically have profiles so they can be played properly, what does this mean with the seemingly large business of remakes and remasters? Does this mean less work on backwards compatibility?
Regardless of whether you find it useful, it still remains one feature that isn’t available on the PlayStation 4. There are currently 23 games that are backwards compatible with more on the way in the future.
    Games available right now:

    1. A Kingdom for Keflings
    2. A World of Keflings
    3. Alien Hominid HD
    4. Banjo-Kazooie
    5. Banjo-Tooie
    6. BattleBlock Theater
    7. Defense Grid
    8. Gears of War
    9. Geometry Wars Evolved
    10. Hexic HD
    11. Jetpac Refuelled
    12. Kameo
    13. Mass Effect
    14. N+
    15. Perfect Dark
    16. Perfect Dark Zero
    17. Shadow Complex
    18. Super Meat Boy
    19. Toy Soldiers
    20. Toy Soldiers: Cold War

A Microsoft lançou faz pouco tempo um novo programa do género deste. O Xbox Game Pass. Para concorrer com o PS Now. Paga-se um valor mensal e tem-se uma lista de 100 jogos, em que uns vão entrando e saindo da lista, para jogar durante o periodo em que se pagou. Mas não é por streaming.
