Stories: The Path of Destinies [PS4]

Stories: The Hidden Path Is A New PS4 Exclusive Action RPG

PlayStation 4 gamers can look forward to a newly announced exclusive action RPG titled Stories: The Hidden Path. Here’s what the official press release said about the game:
As the sole survivor of the vanguard, sky corsair Reynardo is the last line of defense against the mighty imperial armada about to overtake the entire realm. Reynardo fights against impossible odds, knowing that the fate of everything he holds dear rests on his shoulders.
Welcome to Stories: The Hidden Path, an action-RPG set in a vibrant universe filled with floating islands, majestic airships, and flamboyant magic.
Every choice you make in Stories affects the storyline in real-time, and the narrator adapts his tale dynamically to reflect your course of action. With beautiful illustrations at every turn of the page, Stories will have you diving deeper into the narrative nuances each time you play.
Spearhead Games Co-Founder Simon Darveau (who worked as Design Director on Assassin’s Creed III) talked about the game on the official PlayStation Blog:

We’re building Stories to feel like an enchanted book with a different tale to tell each time you open it.
We want to make Stories more than a traditional action-RPG, so we’re crafting a fresh storytelling system that we think will bring extra charm — and maybe even a few surprises — to our newest title. We’re super-proud of how the game is turning out and very excited to share more with you all in the coming months.
Stories: The Hidden Path will be playable at PAX Prime in late August, so if you’re attending you might as well check it at booth #6912; the game is coming “soon” according to the developers. Enjoy these first screenshots and the debut trailer!

Stories Dev: We Chose PS4 For Our Great Relationship W/Sony, But We’re Investigating XB1; PS4 Runs @30 FPS

Stories: The Path of Destinies (previously known as Stories: The Hidden Path) is a fantasy action RPG being developed by Montreal based indie studio Spearhead Games. Steam gamers might know them as the makers of ACE – Arena Cyber Evolution, a Free-to-Play Multiplayer Online Sports Arena now available on Early Access.
The game, built upon Epic’s increasingly popular Unreal Engine 4, is due for release soon on PC and PlayStation 4 which is why we have reached out to the development team in order to learn more about it. Malik Boukhira, Co-Founder of the studio, confirmed that Stories will run at 30FPS on PlayStation 4; we also asked him why the team chose Sony’s console instead of Microsoft’s Xbox One.
Our first game, Tiny Brains, was a launch title for the PS4. Since then we developed a great relationship with Sony, as well as a good experience working on the platform, so it was a natural choice for us to aim for PS4 first. Regarding Xbox One, it’s a possibility we are investigating, but nothing is confirmed at the moment.
Sounds like there’s a chance to see Stories: The Path of Destinies on Xbox One, though it will probably happen some time later than on PC & PS4. Stay tuned for a lot more from our exclusive interview with Spearhead’s Malik Boukhira.

Stories: The Path of Destinies Releasing in Q1 For PC/PS4; It Will Take 25 Hours To Complete All Stories

Action RPG Stories: The Path of Destinies is now very close to its launch date. During our interview with Spearhead Games’ Co-Founder Malik Boukhira, he explained that the game will launch simultaneously on PC and PlayStation 4 in Q1 2016; considering that Q1 ends in March, we’re at most a month away from the release, barring any delays.
We also asked them how much time the game Stories would take to complete. Apparently, it can range from 5 all the way to 25 hours depending on whether you’re interested in playing through all the stories that protagonist Reynardo can possibly experience.

As mentioned previously, Reynardo has many Destinies, but only one path in which he lives. Figuring out what that path is requires that the player complete a few stories, which we estimate takes at least five hours. But to explore every narrative possibility and play through all the stories can easily take up to 25 hours. There are no side quests in Stories, as we had our hands full building such an elaborate narrative structure. However, there are some metroidvania elements in the game in that you can unlock new areas, secrets, and paths depending on which magical swords you craft. Your swords double up as keys to these hidden areas.
Xbox One gamers interested in the indie game shouldn’t despair, as yesterday we’ve reported that the developer is still evaluating whether to publish the game on Microsoft’s console, too.
Stay tuned for our full interview with Malik Boukhira, which will reveal lots of gameplay details of Stories: The Path of Destinies.

Stories: The Path of Destinies Interview – Which Hero Will You Be?

Indie games have made up an increasingly significant segment of the gaming market in recent years, mostly thanks to developer tools such as Unreal Engine 4 or Unity 5 and of course to crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter.
The folks at Spearhed Games, a Montreal based developer, are perhaps even more commendable than the usual indie team as they have been funding Stories: The Path of Destinies themselves, without any publisher or Kickstarter campaign. Revealed during last year’s PAX Prime, this quirky fantasy Action RPG didn’t escape our watch and with the release drawing ever closer, we approached Spearhead’s Co-Founder Malik Boukhira (credited as Level Designer on Assassin’s Creed & Prince of Persia, Game Designer on Assassin’s Creed II and Dead Space 3) to bring you more exclusive details. Enjoy!

    • How did you come up with a character like Reynardo? What was your inspiration for him both from the narrative and visual standpoints?
    • Stories: The Path of Destinies is in part inspired by Charles Perrault-style fairy tales about cats in boots. It’s also a tongue-in-cheek take on classic movie heroes. We wanted our players to experience a colorful and epic tale of adventure that combines both these elements, so having a roguish fox as the main character made a lot of sense.

    • The signature feature of Stories: The Path of Destinies seems to be the ability to influence the story via choices, or the titular paths. Can you explain in detail how this is going to work? Will there be multiple endings?
    • Stories is based on the idea of an enchanted book that tells a different tale each time you open it. A narrator reads the stories in this interactive book as they are written by the player’s choices and actions. And unlike other games with narrative choices, each choice doesn’t just lead to a different ending, it leads to an entirely different story (no single choice will fold back to the outcome of any other choice). Overall there are over two dozen unique stories to discover, with very varied themes and tones, ranging from romance to dark Lovecraftian horror. All these stories are true in their own way. The characters remain the same, though their fates may differ wildly from one tale to the next. Similarly, events can unfold in completely new and unexpected ways, and based on the choices the player makes. However, Reynardo remains aware of all these outcomes (think Edge of Tomorrow), as he tries―and often fails spectacularly―to defeat the evil empire he’s fighting. Just like the player, he grows and learns truths from each story. As you gather the clues each story contains, you’ll eventually be able to figure out a way to win, destroy the Empire, and make it out alive―thus finally making Reynardo the hero he set out to be.

    • Can you tell us how the rewind mechanics will work in combat?
    • They are not quite rewind mechanics, but rather a more unusual player-driven slow motion mechanic. Reynardo has a set of time mastery abilities that allow the player so see the action as a master martial artist would. If the player chooses this path in the skill tree, he or she will be able to slow down time after each attack and wait for the right moment to move again. This not only gives the combat a cinematic feel, it makes the fight almost turn-based on demand!

    • Other than combat, will there be any exploration and/or puzzles in Stories: The Path of Destinies?
    • We wanted to convey a strong sense of adventure in the game, and exploring is definitely an important part of that experience. Yes, you may encounter puzzles here and there to spice up that exploration.

    • How long will it take to complete Stories: The Path of Destinies in one playthrough? Are there side quests?
    • As mentioned previously, Reynardo has many Destinies, but only one path in which he lives.

    • Which engine are you using to create Stories?
    • We use Unreal Engine 4.

    • Can you confirm that the game is going to release first on PlayStation 4 and only afterwards on PC? How much of a delay should gamers expect for this latter version?
    • Right now the plan is to release on PC and PS4 simultaneously.

    • Will the PS4 version launch in Q1 or Q2 2016?
    • Q1 2016.

    • What resolution/frame rate target did you set for the PS4 version?
    • Our target is 30 fps on PS4.

    • Why did you choose Sony’s console over Microsoft’s? Is there any chance to see the game on Xbox One in the future?
    • Our first game, Tiny Brains, was a launch title for the PS4. Since then we developed a great relationship with Sony, as well as a good experience working on the platform, so it was a natural choice for us to aim for PS4 first. Regarding Xbox One, it’s a possibility we are investigating, but nothing is confirmed at the moment.

    • Thank you for your time.

Stories: The Path of Destinies gets a Release Date

Sometimes you need an animal to outfox the opposition and end the war. At least, that’s the feel I’m getting from Spearhead Games’ action-RPG Stories: The Path of Destinies. The developers announced a release date today.
The game, which for those wondering about that introduction stars an anthropomorphic pirate fox, will be available on April 12th for PlayStation 4 and PC.

In fact, it’s up for pre-order on the PlayStation Store at a 10 per cent discount.
The devs summed up the experience:
Reynardo has several ideas to stop the evil Emperor, but as an ex-pirate, let’s just say he’s always been a fan of trial and error over careful planning. While he does enjoy a good elaborate scheme, Reynardo simply has a tendency to, uh, mishandle things in one way or another. But with failure comes knowledge: learning who to trust, which weapons to choose, or when to make a move is essential in this war.
Using a mysterious tome, Reynardo can retrace his steps yet retain crucial information. In the style of classic choose-your-own-adventure books, Stories has players deduce the path that leads to victory as more knowledge is gained from less-than-successful storylines. Complete with hand-drawn illustrations and an unapologetically prodding narrator, Stories delivers a charming choice-based adventure that will subvert traditional fairytale tropes.
Follow Stories on Facebook and Twitter or head to the official site for the latest updates.

Stories: The Path Of Destinies Review – Saving The World, One Choice At A Time

    • Developer/Publisher: Spearhead Games
    • Platform: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4
    • PS4 version tested. Review code provided by the publisher.

Becoming a true hero is a dream that many have, but few ever manage to become one, as the weight of the whole world can break would-be heroes. This isn’t the case with Reynardo, the main character of action RPG Stories: The Path Of Destinies, a fearless ex-pirate who eagerly grabs the chance to really make a difference, confronting an emperor turned evil to save the isles of Boreas and the entire world. In his journey to become the world’s savior, Reynardo will have to make some hard choices which will alter not only his destiny but also that of his closest friends.

Stories: The Path Of Destinies is a true love letter to top down action role playing games of years past. From its gameplay experience to its story and characters, the game evokes an era of gaming long gone, an era when simple yet exciting action and straightforward puzzles were more than enough to entertain players. The game, however, isn’t merely a nostalgia affair as it sports plenty of features lifted from modern titles which create a very interesting mix and unique feel.
Right from the beginning, Stories: The Path Of Destinies manages to be a very engaging experience. As mentioned above, the game stars former pirate Reynardo (an anthropomorphic fox) as he gets involved in the struggle between the Rebellion and the Empire, led by the frog Emperor Isengrim III, a once benevolent and just emperor who turned evil at some point during his reign. Commanding an army of ravens, the Emperor aims to complete an ancient and bloody ritual which will grant him supreme power.
The Stories: The Path Of Destinies fairy tale feel is vastly enhanced by its unique narrative style. The whole tale is told by a nameless narrator as if he was reading a book, with the narrator also acting out all of the characters’ lines. Both the writing and acting are excellent, with some quirky humor here and there that balances out the more serious and grim moments of the story.
Stories: The Path Of Destinies’ fairy tale feel is definitely a breath of fresh air, but it’s the choice system that elevates the story quite and the whole experience. Most of the choices Reynardo will have to make eventually lead to heavy consequences, with somewhat unexpected dark turns in a game featuring such a vibrant art style and light-hearted feel. Some of the outcomes leave such a sad feeling that players will weigh carefully their choices in the following playthroughs.
Bombshell Review - Hello, Mrs Nukem

The whole Stories: The Path Of Destinies experience is centered around the choices that players will be making during the course of the game. A single playthrough consists in a few different chapters, which will play out depending on the choices players make between chapters. Following the introductory sequences, Reynardo will have to choose between rescuing an old friend or seeking out an ancient weapon, with several story paths branching out from this simple yet critical choice. Once a storyline has been completed, players will discover a Truth about a story element, a truth that will unlock additional narrator lines, story details and even areas in subsequent playthroughs. Completionists can also play through a single story line multiple times to unlock different variations of the final outcome.
The excellent Stories: The Path Of Destinies narrative style is complemented well with the actual gameplay. The game plays like a classic top down action role playing game, with a some modern twists that make it feel quite fresh. While exploring a variety of colorful locations, ranging from a deserted village to forest, mountains, and more, players will have to fight against the raven army with a battle system that’s heavily influenced by the Batman: Arkham series’ system. During battles, Reynardo can use his four swords (all coming with special abilities) to attack enemies, parry or dodge their attacks, lift and throw them around, dash to avoid attacks and much more. Alongside the regular enemy types, players will also have to deal with enemies carrying shields and spell casters that require different strategies.
Keeping the combo going allows to obtain increased XP points, which are used to level up Reynaldo and unlock additional abilities. The different skill trees include new abilities for all of Reynardo basic skills, so there’s some small degree of customization. Players can also use the collected materials from chests and breakable objects to forge and enhance his four swords when accessing workshops, workshops that can also be used to outfit Reynardo’s gauntlet with special gems which grant additional special abilities such as the ability to recover energy when defeating enemies, increased critical hit rate and much more. The different swords aren’t useful just in combat, as they can also unlock special doors that lead to more treasures and to the Emperor’s diary, which reveals more about the motivations behind his heinous acts.

Dragon's Dogma PC Review - Hot Like A Dragon's Breath

Combat isn’t the only feature that makes Stories: The Path Of Destinies very fun to play, as exploration is surprisingly pretty varied. There’s never a dull moment in the game: at various times during the game, players will have to complete some short stealth sequences as well as solve some straightforward puzzles, move from one platform to another using the hook and more. Coupled with the very quick pace of the game, all this makes Stories: The Path Of Destinies a very engaging experience.

Even with all its varied exploration elements and smooth battle system, the whole experience, unfortunately, tends to drag after a while. Players will need to discover four Truths to have the chance to see the true ending, they will be playing through the game at least 5 times. Areas are few and quite linear, so you may end up exploring the same places over and over again. The battle system also becomes repetitive after a while, with few enemy types and a low challenge level. The additional combat abilities do add some variety, but it’s not enough to make the umpteenth confrontation exciting. The lack of boss battles is also a rather glaring omission that would have made the experience less repetitive in the long run.
Unfortunately, repetitiveness isn’t the only issue of Stories: Path of Destinies. The PlayStation 4 version does look good, with some impressive particle special effects, but it doesn’t run as smoothly as the game’s battle system would require, with the frame rate going below 30 FPS quite often. The frame rate drops end up making the action unresponsive, leading to mistakes during battles. The generous checkpoint system makes accidental defeats not excessively frustrating, but the issue is still there.

Even with its flaws, Stories: The Path Of Destinies is an enjoyable action role playing game with a very unique feel and gameplay features. The blend of old and new mechanics works incredibly well, easily keeping players engaged in the first few playthroughs. Things do become repetitive in the long run, but the unique choice system manages to carry things along until the true ending.
Making choices is tough business, but you’ll definitely love seeing your destiny unfold before your eyes as much as Reynardo does during the course of his life-changing adventure.
