    Pokken Tournament [Wii U]

Pokken Tournament officially coming to Wii U, everywhere in 2016

Pokken Tournament is a game that feels like it should have been made long ago, but at least it’s finally looking like we’ll all get our chance to play it. The mashup, beat’em up is a mix of Tekken and Pokemon, which was until now, only available at arcades in Japan, but that’s now changed, as Nintendo and Bandai Namco have announced that the game is coming to Wii Us all over the world in spring 2016.

    Pikcahu’s neck isn’t broken here, he’s just mid-spin attack.
While the game won’t feature every pokemon, it will feature the more ass kicking, punching, humanoid ones, battling it out in 3D environments of various types at different locations around the world. In the new trailer released over the weekend, we see Charizards duking it out with Gengars, Blazikens and Pikachus, all firing off traditional beat’em up moves, as well as more fantastical energy attacks.

There’s also a Pikcahu in a luchador outfit. He’s called Pickahu Libre, because, you know, Japan.
The potentially more exciting aspect of Pokken Tournament coming to the west however, is that Nintendo could well be working on Pokemon themed Amiibo. That could in turn mean the potential, eventual usage of them on some more console based, traditional Pokemon title.

Pokken Tournament New Commercial Showcases Playable Characters

Among the more interesting Wii U games releasing next year in all regions is Pokken Tournament, a unique fighting game developed in collaboration with Bandai Namco. The game made its debut in Japanese arcades last Summer and it will be released on Wii U sometime during 2016 in North America and Europe.

As the game is quickly approaching its Japanese release date, Nintendo has been showing more of the Wii U version of Pokken Tournament in the past few weeks. And more of it has been shown a few hours ago with a new Japanese TV Commercial which showcases some of the game’s playable fighters. Even though the commercial is only available in Japanese as of now, it’s definitely a good watch even for Western players.

As the name implies, Pokken Tournament is a unique fighting game combining elements from the Pokemon franchise, such as powerful special moves and the Mega Evolution mechanic, and the popular fighting game series Tekken. The whole experience, however, is going to be less technical than in the Tekken games so that even those who haven’t played many fighting games can enjoy Pokken Tournament to the fullest.
The Wii U version of Pokken Tournament is going to come with some features that aren’t available in the original arcade release, such as new characters Shadow Mewtwo (a special character that can also be unlocked right from the start by using the Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card), Sceptile and more. Yesterday it’s also been confirmed that the Wii U version of Pokken Tournament is going to support local multiplayer.
Pokken Tournament will be released in Japan on March 18th 2016. The game’s North American and European release dates have yet to be confirmed but we will surely hear more about the matter in the near future, so stay tuned for all the latest news.

Pokemon-infused Wii U controller will reach the US in March

If you're a huge Pokemon fan, and you own the Nintendo Wii U, you might want to check out the awesome-looking Pokken Tournament Wii U controller from Hori.

Earlier this month, the Pokken Tournament Wii U controller popped up in Japan, and it looked like it was exclusive to the country at first. Well, it will be pushed out to a much wider audience when it launches early next year, with the Pokemon-infused (as Engadget calls it) fighting game controller is on Amazon for a price of $24.99, and a launch date of March 18, 2016.

Hori's Pokken Tournament Wii U controller features the same design of the arcade version of Pokken Tournament, with the "ZL" and "ZR" buttons on its face, instead of around the back on the traditional Wii U controllers from Nintendo.

Pokken Tournament Single Battle Mode, Local Multiplayer And Online Mode Get New Details

Pokken Tournament, the fighting game based on the Pokemon series directed by Tekken series creator Katsuhiro Harada, is going to debut on Wii U later this year. The home console version will come with some new features that are not available in the arcade version such as extra playable fighters and more. The game’s official Japanese website has been updated earlier with some new details on these extra features of the Wii U version.

The Pokken Tournament official Japanese website has confirmed that Pokken Tournament Wii U will include a single player mode called Single Battle, complete with three different difficulty levels. The previously revealed Local Battle mode has also been confirmed officially by the website, with one player using the Wii U GamePad and the other one of the many supported controllers. During this mode, the game will run at 30FPS and not at 60FPS.

There is, however, a way to play a Pokken Tournament local multiplayer match at 60 FPS. The game’s official website has confirmed that Pokken Tournament will support a LAN mode, obviously requiring two Wii U consoles and a LAN cable.
The Pokken Tournament official website has also confirmed some nice new details on the game’s online mode, revealing that the upcoming fighting game will feature rankings and competitions. Not much else has been said about the matter, but this should make those planning to invest time in the game’s online mode quite happy.
Pokken Tournament will be released in Japan on March 18th 2016. The game’s North American and European release dates have yet to be confirmed but we will surely hear more about the matter in the near future, so stay tuned for all the latest news.

Nintendo Celebrating 20th Anniversary of Pokémon

Most people will remember the little pocket monsters (more commonly known as Pokémon). From the cute little Pikachu to the unstoppable power of Mewtwo, the classics of which many grew up either as parents or children. To celebrate Pokémon’s 20th Anniversary, Nintendo is releasing a whole bunch of Pokémon content to celebrate.
Styled after Tekken Tournament, Pokken Tournament will see you facing your favourite Pokémon off in epic, fast-paced real-time battles. With characters like Charizard and Mewtwo making appearances alongside some of the newer generations. With at least 16 fighters, with Magikarp (we don’t understand either) and Sylveon amongst those that are already named. Initially released as an arcade game in Japan, as with many games it didn’t take long for it to reach the rest of the world.
Set for a March 18th release date worldwide you could be fighting your favourite classics against each other sooner than originally expected.

Watch 15 minutes of English Pokken Tournament here

Despite launching in Japan as a – relatively unprofitable – arcade cabinet in mid-2015, Pokkén Tournament still has yet to show up on the Wii U. That’s going to change on 18th March though, so it’s about time we had a better look at what the game is all about. Fortunately there’s now 15 minutes of in-game footage to enjoy, all in glorious English too.
With this particular video, it might be worth skipping over the first two minutes, as there’s a lot of Avatar customisation with in-game currency purchases for hair, clothing, effects etc.. However following that, we get right into a battle between MewTwo and Lucario, who beat seven shades out of each other with a variety of physical attacks and epic abilities.
Aesthetically the game isn’t bad looking at all, and there’s clearly a lot of depth in how you customise your Pokémon as they level up and unlock upgrades. Here’s hoping that the announcer is only there to give you tips as part of a tutorial though, as she doesn’t shut up.

Later when we move on to character select screens, we can see that there are 14 characters to choose from, plus a bonus Shadow MewTwo, though there may be others to unlock as the screen certainly has space for it. There’s also a wide combination of support characters to choose from, offering different abilities and skills for the fight to come.

There looks to be 19 stages to play on in total, ranging from scorching volcanoes, to simple training gyms.

Pokkén Tournament Review – Eye of the Arcanine

Developer/Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment/The Pokèmon Company
    Platform: WiiU, $59.99/£39.99
Review code provided by the publisher.
Back in the late 90s, early millennium, Pokémon hype had reached a fever pitch. The Game Boy games were incredible, the anime seemed unstoppable – Pikachu owned this land and we were his tenants. But there has always been a key disconnect that many fans and non-fans wished would be addressed – the way Pokémon battled in the anime, with beautiful animated complexity, and the way they battled in the game, with simple 8-bit sprites, it simply didn’t look or feel like anime fans would hope. And it may have taken 20 years, but The Pokémon Company and Nintendo are finally addressing that with the help of the fighting pros over at Bandai Namco – and now we have Pokkén Tournament.
Pokkén Tournament is a fighting game through and through, with 16 playable ‘mon that can dish out intimidating and electrifying special attacks. The fights are played out in two Phases, a Field Phase and a Duel Phase. During the field phase controls feel more akin to a few anime fighters such as Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm and J-Stars Victory VS, two other Bandai Namco offerings. Here the camera is third person and you can move your Pokémon freely around the field, to dodge attacks and move closer for some of your own. What’s key here is the ability to sidestep left and right, to move around your opponent and dodge nasty projectile attacks.

In Duel Phase everything looks a bit more like a traditional fighter. The camera moves to a side-on perspective, more like Street Fighter or Tekken, with your Pokémon able to move left or right, or charge down and up for different move variations. Here there’s more combo potential than in Field Phase, as there are plenty of moves that cancel into one another, and pinning an enemy Pokémon against the wall will open them up to a few free blows from you.
In terms of controls, your four face buttons act as a projectile, combo and basic attack buttons. All behave a bit differently depending on your Pokémon, which phase and how you’re charging them. You have a jump button, which opens you up to a small range or aerial moves too, which of course can avoid projectiles, but also opens you up to your opponent’s anti-air techniques…
Pokkén’s battle system boils down to a game of rock, paper, scissors, rock being your attacks, paper being your guard, and scissors representing Pokkén’s counters. Grabs are performed with B + Y, and thanks to the button placement will be familiar with anyone using grabs in games like Street Fighter. If your opponent is trying to attack while you grab, they’ll beat you out and you’ll take more damage, but if they’re trying to counter it’s quite the opposite. The opposite is of course true for counters, where taking damage will only strengthen your attack and being grabbed will end badly. The way counters and grabs work in Pokkén means they’re not something you use when your back is against the wall, you use them whenever you see an attack coming – and the counter will lash out at enemies even if you don’t actually get hit while charging, meaning it’s pretty safe to do unless your opponent grabs.

    Advertisements

The metagame of Pokkén Tournament is one I can easily see becoming a mind game of rock, paper, scissors and guessing which move your opponent will perform next. Not so much about combos, but getting in a few quick attacks which can end up dealing a surprising amount of damage.
You also have Support Pokémon, which can be summoned into battle to either deal some light damage, impact the enemy’s stats or buff your own. There’s a surprisingly wide array of Support Pokémon, which I feel are probably there to make up for only having 16 fighters present, despite the number of possible Pokémon being in the hundreds.
But by far my favorite thing about Pokkén Tournament has to be Burst Attacks, visually stunning special moves that never disappoint. You build your burst gauge during battle, like many fighters, and then activate your Burst Mode. During this mode, hitting L+R together will activate your Burst Attack and, assuming they’ve not blocked it, you’ll enjoy this. Pikachu’s Burst Attack flicks his opponent into the air before landing a beautiful Thunder Punch, Mega Blaziken damages with a burning kick, Mega Gengar has what looks to be a devilish Dream Eater which deals massive damage – and of course, each playable Pokémon has their own move, all of them beautiful.

But despite Pokkén’s solid mechanics, I’m struggling to see it become a massive competitive success. That’s what Nintendo obviously wants to happen, with their support, taking the game to EVO 2016 and with fighting game legend Justin Wong coaching the Pokkén teams this year. Nintendo want this to be a big game, but unfortunately, I’m not sure it will be. Sure, everything is mechanically solid, but still feels a bit too random and opportunistic. Skill and understanding the game can still be overwhelmed by a button masher with a little bit of tuition. Long-term, I don’t see this standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros., but for the here and now Pokkén is really, really good.
There’s a decent amount of single player content to take part it, completing which will at least take a few hours. Local battles, online battles and plenty of Player VS CPU options will also increase the amount of playtime for anyone wanting to play this beyond the single player offerings.
Pokkén Tournament is a fantastic game to put on when you have friends around, kids, or even family. Accessible, with enough complexity to entertain more established fighters. It’s not likely to be anyone’s replacement for Street Fighter or Super Smash Bros., but it’s well worth sinking hours into, alone or with friends.
