Huawei partners with optics specialist Leica to 'reinvent' smartphone photography

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei and German camera and lens specialist Leica have announced a strategic partnership which they promise will reinvent smartphone photography.
Oliver Kaltner, CEO of Leica Camera, acknowledged in an adjective-heavy press release that smartphones make a very important contribution to the world of photography and open an important door for his company to target new groups and fields of application.

Pleasantries aside, Leica's exact role in the partnership isn't clearly defined. The duo said the partnership will span research and development, design, co-engineering, user experience, marketing and retail distribution. But what exactly does that mean? Will Leica simply supply lenses for Huawei's smartphone cameras?
Huawei is already the third-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Likewise, Leica has been in business for well over 160 years and has built a reputation as one of the top (and most expensive) optics companies around. That said, it's not like either side needs help boosting their street cred by leveraging the name brand of the other yet on the other hand, additional brand recognition certainly wouldn't hurt matters either.

Leica is no stranger to the smartphone business. The company worked with Panasonic on the Lumix CM1 smartphone in 2014. Designed primarily to compete with devices like Samsung's Galaxy K Zoom, the CM1 was essentially a digital camera with an integrated smartphone.
It featured a 1-inch image sensor capable of producing 20-megapixel images through a Leica-branded f/2.8 aperture fixed lens. Its high price point, however, kept it from ever really becoming a serious threat in the industry.

Panasonic GH5 reportedly capable of shooting 6K at 30FPS

Panasonic's GH4 camera is the camera of choice for many YouTubers and video enthusiasts, as it's capable of shooting 4K video at 30FPS, with a consumer-orientated price point. Well, Panasonic's next-gen GH series camera is set to knock off some socks, and some.

According to Japanese publication Nikkan, Panasonic's new GH5/GH6 camera will shoot 6K video at 30FPS. This means that each frame of the 6K video is shot in 16 megapixels, meaning you can grab 16-megapixel still photos from the 6K video - an awesome feature.

Panasonic also teased their new 8K-capable consumer level camera in May 2015, where ephotozine reported: "Panasonic announced plans for future 4K and 8K video and photo features, including 4K at 60fps and 120fps, as well as the ability to take 33 megapixel still images from 8K video footage. They say they are planning to have this technology ready for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games. No further information was given at the time".

Thanks to HWC's Eber Antony, as I saw this on his Twitter feed.

Zhiyun Z1 Smooth R Stabilizes Your Smartphone Images And Is Compatible With A Wide Range Of Devices

Majority of manufacturers incorporate OIS chips in their devices to remove blurred out images from the equation. Unfortunately, not every smartphone camera features an OIS chip, meaning that your images and videos can end up becoming too shaky for your liking. This is the why Zhiyun Z1 Smooth R has been made, to eliminate this issue indefinitely.

Zhiyun Z1 Smooth R Is Compatible Will All Smartphones Under 7 Inches – Supports Both iPhone And Android Devices

Where mirror and mirrorless cameras become too bulky to carry around, photography junkies have relied on their mobile devices and action cameras to capture images and footage. With Zhiyun Z1 Smooth R, the handheld stabilizer helps to prevent the user from capturing shaky images and videos, and according to the company, the result comes out like you would be capturing images and videos standing while standing still. The product has a weight of 2.2 pounds grams, suggesting that your hands will not feel strained after carrying it for an extended period of time.

The stabilizer features three operation modes and they have been listed below:

    • Heading Following Mode: In this mode, the indicator will blink slowly and pitch and roll functions are locked. The head rotates smoothly follow the direction of the handheld.
    • Locking Mode: In this mode, the indicator light up and pitching and roll functions are both locked.
    • Heading and Pitch Following Mode: In this mode, the indicator will blink quickly and the roll function is locked. Additionally, heading and pitch will rotate smoothly follow the direction of the handheld.

In areas where there is immense amount of wind or if you are moving severely, then the control accuracy of the motor is around 0.02 degrees, and is able to adapt accordingly to the surrounding environment in order to capture the best possible footage. This will also require you to keep your hand still since you cannot expect the entire gadget to do the work for you.
According to the manufacturer, it supports Bluetooth connectivity and currently has two official models; one that supports smartphones, and the other that supports action cams. Keep in mind that you cannot use a smartphone and action cam in a single device and you will have to purchase them separately according to the gadget that you will end up using. Pricing details of both models have been listed below along with which devices it is compatible with.

As for the pricing details, Zhiyun Z1 Smooth R sports a $249.99 tag, and is currently available on Amazon. Do you think the price is right for a product like this? Let us know your thoughts right away.

    Canon’s $550 Rebel T6 Brings NFC And Wi-Fi To Entry-Level DSLR Market

Digital SLR cameras are finally starting to catch up with smartphones! Surprised by that statement? Well, we're not talking about picture quality—DSLR cameras still and might always take better photos than smartphones—but in terms of offering basic connectivity features even in entry-level models. Such is the case with Canon's new EOS Rebel T6, an entry-level DSLR with built-in Wi-Fi and NFC support.

We take Wi-Fi and NFC support for granted when it comes to most mobile devices, including tablets and smartphones, but it's not difficult to find a DSLR that lacks one or both, especially in what's considered budget territory (for a DSLR). But those same amenities found in Canon's higher priced DSLRs are now available in an entry-level model. This is just the third EOS Rebel model to feature built-in Wi-Fi and NFC, the other two being the EOS Rebel T6s and T6i introduced a year ago.

The inclusion of Wi-Fi and NFC support in the EOS Rebel T6 lets photographers share their pictures and videos to select social media sites, transfer to a mobile device, and print when connected to a compatible device using the Camera Connect app. Photographers can also use their iOS and Android devices as remote controls, which can be useful when taking a self-portrait or group shot.

Beyond wireless capabilities, the EOS Rebel T6 boasts an 18-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) image sensor paired with Canon's DIGIC 4+ Image Processor for fast, high quality shots. It has an ISO range of 100-6400 in whole-stop increments (expandable equivalent to ISO 12800), 9-point auto-focus system (including one center cross-type AF), and a 3-inch LCD monitor.

"Smartphone users passionate about photography and ready to take that next step to creating their best images and videos ever will appreciate the ease-of-use and affordability of the new EOS Rebel T6 camera," said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "With the latest addition of the EOS Rebel T6 camera, the Canon EOS Rebel series continues to be one of the most popular DSLR camera lines on the market."

You can record video with the EOS Rebel T6. It supports Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) at 30 frames per second or 24 frames per second, HD (1280x720) at 60 frames per second, and SD (640x480) at 30 frames per second.

The EOS Rebel T6 will be available in April for $550 bundled with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II standard zoom lens.

Sony's new RX10 III offers 3x the zoom range of its predecessor

Sony on Tuesday announced an updated version of its popular superzoom camera. The new Cyber-shot RX10 III offers a three-fold increase in zoom length albeit with some compromises.
The RX10 III features a 25x super-telephoto lens with an equivalent focal range of 24-600mm, far more reach than the previous model’s 24-200mm range. The tradeoff, however, is that Sony had to ditch the constant f/2.8 aperture and instead opt for a variable f/2.4 – 4.0 aperture.
Sony says the lens features eight ED glass elements – one super ED glass element, five ED glass elements and two ED aspherical lenses – and is equipped with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. When active, it compensates for roughly 4.5 stops of exposure.

Lens aside, the camera is pretty much identical to the previous iteration. It features the same back-illuminated 20.1 MP 1.0-type stacked CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processing engine that offers a sensitivity range of ISO 64 to ISO 12,800 and DRAM chip found on the RX10 II.
Together, they allow the camera to shoot at 14 frames per second with minimal blackout and shoot slow motion video at up to 960 frames per second. What's more, the camera is capable of reaching shutter speeds as fast as 1/32,000th of a second. The electronic shutter, meanwhile, allows photographers to capture quietly without disturbing the subject. Wi-Fi and NFC come standard as well.

Sony’s Cyber-shot RX10 III goes on sale in May and will set buyers back around $1,500, the company said.

Panasonic expands Lumix family with GX85, a compact mirrorless Micro Four Thirds shooter

Panasonic’s Lumix family of digital cameras added another member on Tuesday with the introduction of the GX85, a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera that’s a bit more affordable than its predecessor.
The GX85 features a 16-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor that doesn’t use a low-pass filter, resulting in finer detail. Panasonic says its new Venus Engine helps reduce the moiré that a low-pass filter is typically used to negate.

Elsewhere, you’ll find a new 5-axis stabilization system to help with lenses that don’t have optical image stabilization. For lenses that do have built-in stabilization systems, the two can work in tandem for even steadier shots. There’s also a new electromagnetic drive in the shutter unit to reduce shock caused by the movement of the shutter diaphragm (and enable stealth shooting).
Around back is a 3-inch touch display that tilts up by 80 degrees and down by 45 degrees, making it easier to shoot at high and low angles, respectively. Optionally, the 16:9 LVF (live view finder) boasts 2.764 million dots with 35mm camera equivalent magnification and 100 percent field of view although unlike last year’s GX8, the LVF here sits in a fixed position.
The GX85 is also 4K capable, capturing video at 3,840 x 2,160 at 30p or 24p. There’s also 1080p capture (60Hz), should you not need maximum resolution, and a Post Focus function that lets users select an in-focus area after a shot has been snapped.
Panasonic says the GX85 will be available late next month in your choice of black or silver color schemes priced at $799.99 with a 12-32mm kit lens.
