iPhone 8 to sport OLED display if Samsung and LG get their way

Speculation is already building around next year’s iPhone 7, but a new report may hint at the future of Apple’s smartphones that are still several years out. According to The Korea Times, Samsung and LG are already hoping to convince Apple to switch from LCD to OLED displays by 2018.
Both companies produce OLED technology, which stands for organic light-emitting diodes, and include it in their own devices. However, with Android phones sales beginning to slow down both South Korean firms may be looking for a new source of income. Samsung may even have an early head start over LG.
“Samsung Display has recently renewed talks with Apple to supply its small-sized OLED displays for the next iPhones to be released in a few years, which I believe is around 2018,” an anonymous industry executive told The Korea Times.
The Galaxy-maker is apparently also looking to Chinese phone-makers who may be interested in buying OLED displays. However, scoring a deal with Apple could be the surest way to boost profits.
Convincing Cupertino to switch from LCD to OLED won’t be easy. LCD panels are the cheaper option, which means more profits for Apple. Then again, OLED does have some advantages, especially the flexible version that Samsung and LG have been producing more recently.
If Apple ends up switching over to OLED it could mean the first flexible or curved-screen iPhone, though we probably won’t see anything announced until at least 2018.

Japan Display Reportedly Securing OLED Panels For iPhone 8

Apple could be planning to make bigger changes in the iPhone lineup in the coming years. The company has been using LCD display panels in its iPhones for quite a long while. However, a new report by Nikkan suggests that the Cupertino-based company and Japan Display are preparing OLED panels for the iPhone 8. The Japan Display is in its early stages of converting its Ishikawa-based factory into a test production line. The purpose behind this is to win OLED display orders from Apple in the near future.

iPhone 8 to be equipped With OLED Panels?

At the October end, a report suggested that Apple would convert to OLED displays manufactured by Samsung for the forthcoming iPhone. As more reports funneled into the rumor mill, Apple was unlikely to begin using OLED panels until 2018. Last month, Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities reported that Apple will not begin using OLED panels for the next three years at least. Japan Display is actively focused on producing OLED displays for Apple’s iPhone 8.
Currently, JDI has been one of the largest LCD display supplier of Apple. However, the company lacks behind Samsung and LG when it comes to OLED display production. In that regard, JDI has to diversify itself by beginning OLED production. Apple’s decision to adopt OLED panels in its iPhone lineup will cause JDI to suffer while Samsung might flourish. LG might also win a fairly significant share of Apple’s OLED orders.
    Advertisements

Although it still enjoys large LCD panel orders from Apple, preparing for future orders would be a wise step. Obviously JDI would need to adopt necessary transitions in OLED testing production lines with an intent to have mass production ready for the iPhone 8 in 2018.
Apple has used OLED displays in the Apple Watch, this indicates that the company is not afraid to use it in its future products. It remains to be seen if Apple is actually planning on adopting OLED displays in the future. JDI’s LCD business could face significant damage if it does not secure OLED orders from Apple. If these rumors turn out to be true, the iPhone 8 could come as the company’s first iPhone with an OLED display. Interestingly, today’s report mentions 2018 as the year Apple could convert to OLED displays from LCD.
This is it for now, folks. Would you guys prefer an iPhone equipped with an OLED panel? Share your thoughts in the comments.

iPhone In 2017 Rumored To Sport A Massive 5.8 Inch Display

Apple’s largest iPhone has not gone beyond the screen size of 5.5 inches, but it looks that is going to change forever, thanks to the latest rumor.

2017 iPhone Rumored To Feature An iPhone 4 Design As Well As A 5.8 inch Screen

According to a reliable Apple analyst by the name of Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is expected to revamp its entire iPhone lineup during the year 2017. This means that the largest smartphone from the company will not only feature a massive 5.8 inch display, but is also expected to be incorporated with a glass casing and an AMOLED display. One of the primary reasons why Apple will be resorting to incorporating this is because using plastic will not offer thin and light form factor designs, which is what the tech giant is aiming for all along.
The last time we covered this rumor, we stated that large screen smartphones have natural advantages at their fingertips; companies can choose to incorporate larger sized batteries inside them, and the overall viewing experience improves thanks to all that extra real estate. Samsung has been reported of investing over $7 billion into supplying OLED displays for future iPhones, following rumors last year that 2018 would mark Apple’s official shift from LCD to OLED displays in its popular smartphone line.

    Advertisements

OLED screens have several advantages, which will be covered in a later topic, but its primary perk will be that it will deliver sharper images and consume less power, leading to improved battery life. Those are not the only improvements that we will be seeing in the next iPhones. In a previous post, we stated that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7 Plus was reported to come with 256GB of internal storage as its highest capacity model, along with a 3,100mAh battery, suggesting that iPhones coming in 2017 and 2018 will have even larger capacities.
READ How To Force Restart iPhone And iPad

Moreover, it is possible that iPhone 8, which is the device coming in 2017 will sport a chipset designed by Apple on a single manufacturing process; 7nm FinFET. According to the latest report, Apple has already assigned TSMC to mass produce all A10 chipsets, and it is highly possible that the A11 SoC present in iPhone 8 will also be mass produced by the Taiwanese firm as well. TSMC has a different approach to counter the lack of yield generation of chips on a smaller lithographic process. The company will most likely use multi-patterning lithography at 7nm rather than EUV, which was once labelled as a savior for the semiconductor industry.

With a 5.8 inch iPhone, it appears that Apple is getting extremely serious of targeting the massive device market, but do you think it is a smart proposition on the company’s part? Let us know your thoughts right away.

Apple may launch 5.8-inch OLED iPhone next year

We have been hearing a lot about Apple’s future iPhone 7 and iPhone 7S plans recently, with the company reportedly assigning Samsung with the task of supplying a percentage of future OLED displays. On top of that, companies like LG and Foxconn/Sharp are in the running to supply the rest. However, it looks like more changes could be coming, with a larger screen for the plus-sized iPhone.
According to a 9to5Mac report, the latest investor note from Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, claims that the 2017 iPhone will make the jump up to a 5.8-inch OLED display as well as a new form-factor.

Apparently this 5.8-inch iPhone will come with thinner bezels and a slight curve to allow more screen to fit on a device the same size as the current iPhone 6 Plus, which features a 5.5-inch display. The design will also resemble that of an iPhone 4, with Gorilla Glass on the front and back with metal on the sides.
These changes won’t be arriving until the 2017 iPhone though, which means that the iPhone 7 this year may not be as huge a step forward as we have seen in the past.

This iPhone 8 Concept Comes In Three Sizes, Modular Design, OLED Display, More – Images

It’s a given fact that Apple will be announcing a new smartphone at the end of this year – the iPhone 7. And many concept designers at this point in time are hard at work wondering what the new device will eventually end up looking like. While some designers have taken an all-out approach, some have decided to stick with the leaks and rumors to guess what we might end up seeing from the Cupertino camp. But today, we’ve stumbled upon a concept for a device whose details are nearly non-existent – the iPhone 8, and the thought that has went inside its creation is actually quite appealing.

Rather than presenting something that’s massively 3D and filled with detailed textures and whatnot, this iPhone 8 concept from Andrew Fox takes a turn towards the minimal side of the design fence. And also, rather than tossing in bold features onto a smartphone concept, Andrew believes Apple should stick to its ‘innovative’ roots with the iPhone 8, and hopes that things will stay that way when the smartphone does see the light of day.

The design of the iPhone 8 is kept to the bare minimum, with flat corners, front and back being the order of the day. There’s absolutely nothing too fancy about this concept at all, something which we dearly love. And to top things off, the iPhone 8 is imagined to have a true edge to edge display, giving users a great sense of the content they’re consuming, while also making sure they aren’t distracted by the hardware of the device itself.
This Crazy iPhone 7 Concept Is Far From Reality

On the internal hardware front, the iPhone 8 is imagined to be completely modular, allowing users to upgrade their hardware at any given time. The modular bits include the battery, storage, camera, as well as the processor.
    Advertisements

The device is also imagined to come with wireless charging, waterproofing, dual lens camera, an OLED display and just two color options – black and white. And to appease those who are into such a thing, the iPhone 8 seemingly has support for a ‘stylus’ as well. We’re not sure how useful it would be on a smaller screen, but we’ll give the idea bonus points when it comes to creativity.
To top things off, Andrew imagines the iPhone 8 to come in three sizes instead of two – 4-inch, 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch. This is absolutely a perfect move, given the fact that people still consider the 4-inch form factor to be the ideal size when it comes to day to day usage.
What do you think about the above concept? Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
