QPAD DX-20 Optical Gaming Mouse Review

    QPAD DX-20 Optical Review

    Manufacturer: QPAD
    UK price (as reviewed):
    Approx £69.99 (inc VAT)
    US price (as reviewed): TBC

For as long as we can remember (well seven years ago anyway), QPAD's mice have been fairly large, comfortable things that were generally a joy for palm grip users thanks to their five finger grip supports and well-placed buttons. They had a distinctly ambilevous design, plenty of buttons and that's the way things have stayed.

The DX-20, though, marks a change from this norm for the first time for QPAD and it's certainly a very different offering to the company's 5K or 8K Pro gaming mice. It's Intellimouse-inspired design is smaller all round and far narrower especially, but thankfully the length hasn't been squished as to make your fingers drapw over the ends of the main buttons - it's plenty long enough at just under 130mm even for the largest hands.

While it doesn't offer a full five finger support, there's enough of a chassis here to cater for at least your thumb and three fingers. However, if you're moving from a larger mouse, the lack of support for your pinky and semi-support for your ring finger and thumb will be very noticeable. It sports a rather narrow ambidextrous design with an hourglass shape so the overall result is actually something that lends itself to pretty much all grip types once you get used to it of course.

There's a surprising amount of weight in what's otherwise a compact, entirely plastic chassis with no adjustable weights included. At 97g this might be a tad too heavy for some given the Logitech G402 noticeably larger yet comes in only a few grams more, while the Cooler Master Xornet II weighs considerably less. However, there are loads of heavier mice out there including many of Razor's.

The exterior sports a soft-tough coating and apart from some slight rough edges under the right mouse button that can occasionally catch your ring finger, it's a very pleasant mouse to hold, even for long periods. There are four large Teflon feet with a pack of replacements in the box - always a nice touch plus you get a nylon carry case too.

There are seven programmable buttons - the two usual, scroll wheel, a pair of thumb buttons and two DPI sensitivity toggles behind the scroll wheel. As your fingers tend to sit a fair way forwards and relatively flat, it can be an effort to move them back to the toggle switches, especially in a hurry, but it's good to see a pair here rather than a single button.

The thumb buttons feel absolutely fantastic with a light yet firm positive feel and great physical and audible feedback. The main buttons use Omron switches and these sport a relatively even actuation pressure a surprising way back from the front of the mouse, again reinforcing the fact the DX-20 can lend itself well to a number of grip types. If you're a fan of quite scroll wheels then this is definitely the mouse for you. There's no free-wheel toggle as you might see on a Logitech mouse, but it feels just as good as the thumb buttons, with a smooth yet light resistance that offers plenty of feedback with very low noise, even if you're flick-scrolling up and down rapidly.

The Pixart/Avago 3320 optical sensor claims zero acceleration and we'd have to agree as much as out hands and eyes could tell us, although if you're really going for broke, it's worth noting the claimed 80 inches per second tracking, which is less than most other QPAD mice, which offer as high as 150IPS and triple the image processing rate too. That said, we only saw smooth, precise tracking from the DX-20, which was a joy to use straight out of the box.

Synaptics IronVeil Fingerprint Sensor Integrated Into Mice

Advancing The Human Interface – Synaptics IronVeil

Synaptics has been working on integrating different sensors into different products to make them more user friendly. One of those sensors is a fingerprint reader, similar to what we are used to on mobile devices. Working with Thermaltake, LiteOn, EVGA and others, Synaptics has integrated their latest fingerprint sensor, IronVeil, into various mice.
    image: http://www.legitreviews.com/wp-conte...il-645x322.jpg

Synaptics IronVeil Technology is made up of a tiny fingerprint module that features a 4 x 10mm sensor that s used to scan your fingerprint. It takes just 100ms to acquire the data from the sensor and then about 80ms to match it. Synaptics noted that processor speed does matter and that the 80ms match time is done using a high-end Intel Core i7 processor. That is very fast considering that it usually takes 4-7 seconds to type in a complicated secure password if you can get it typed in right the first time around. The chance of a false positive, where a user is approved without the correct fingerprint match is one in 50,000 and there is a 3% chance for the correct fingerprint is rejected.
    image: http://www.legitreviews.com/wp-conte...il-645x365.jpg

Synaptics IronVeil is FIDO compliant, and is supported natively in Windows 10 with Windows Hello. Synaptics sees IronVeil being a big deal for eCommerece sites, and social media platforms, which are supported in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and IE. For gamers using game client access (Steam, Origin) and they see it making in-game purchases easy as once your credit card is on file you can just opt to buy something and then just verify the purchase with your fingerprint. Synaptics thinks that this will make in-game purchases fluid and quick.
It should also help keep eSports gambling legitimate as more and more people are playing for money. People are ‘smurfing’ these days on eSports, so IronVeil enables a way for gamer identity verification. If you are betting or even playing competitively you might want to be sure you playing against an appropriately experienced player rather than a very experience player ‘smurfing’ as a novice player, this is where Synaptics IronVeil Gamer Verification can be useful. In addition, all of those various authenticators we seem to need for online gaming can be replaced with IronVeil’s Authenticator.

The Thermaltake Black V2 gaming mouse is one example of Synaptics IronVeil integration in a retail product. The Thermaltake Black V2 mouse has the features that gaming enthusiasts want, making the combination of a fingerprint reader and mouse a great idea. With the Avago laser sensor, it is capable of on the fly DPI adjustments up to 5700DPI, while the Omron switches makes clicking the buttons reliable. Other features of the Black V2 include a customizable weight system, red LED illumination lighting systems, up to 35 macro button combinations, and a new rubber coating.

The Thermaltake Black V2 mouse is a fairly low cost gaming mouse, which by itself can be purchased online for $49.99. There will be a Thermaltake Black V2 mouse with the Synaptics IronVeil fingerprint reader built-in coming soon for around $59.99. We happened to get in an early prototype and have been using it the past couple weeks.
Let’s take a look at the software provided by Synaptics to make the fingerprint reader usable.

    Hard cheese for mice-less Logitech

Getting into entertainment did not help that much

Logitech’s attempts to exit its iconic mice making business and get into something more musical did little for the company’s bottom line this year.

The outfit’s quarterly operating profit fell 1.5 percent which on the face of it could have been a lot worse.
Logitech decided to get out of the mouse making business and refocused on new accessory lines like wireless music speakers, video conferencing and video game controllers. It hoped this would offset a decline in personal computers and demand for its mice and keyboards.
It nearly paid off. At the end of the year there was a sudden demand for Logitech’s newer music and video accessories but it failed to stop shrinking demand for its other computer add-ons.
It reported an operating profit of $74.2 million for the fiscal third quarter, a decline from $78.6 million. This was reflecting a move to exit the mouse business over the past year.
Still the results were better than Wall Street predicted so it was not all bad. Analysts thought looking for an operating profit of $73.11 million.
Net sales in the December quarter rose about 3 percent to $621.1 million compared to the mean estimate by analysts of $631.6 million.

    ZOWIE Mice Recall Announcement

Apesar da maioria dos casos detectados serem na região nórdica e norte americana, os restantes também têm direito a troca.

Thanks to the information from early buyers, it is discovered that random double-clicks are observed in the new ZOWIE FK1, FK2, ZA11, ZA12, ZA13, EC1-A, EC2-A models and such occurrences are discovered so far in the Nordic and the North America region. Due to reliability concerns, production and worldwide sales of the above mentioned models will be halted. Consumers that have acquired the specific products can call your retailer and register for you replacement within valid warranty.

In countries and regions that are not aforementioned, it is with little possibility for consumers to experience the random double-clicking. Nonetheless, owners of the FK1, FK2, ZA11, ZA12, ZA13, EC1-A, EC2-A models are offered with product replacement -- no condition binding and you can contact your local retailor for more information.
