    Psychonauts 2 [PC, PS4, X1]

Psychonauts 2 Announced; Double Fine Seeks Crowdfunding On Fig

Yes, you read that right. During The Game Awards 2015, Double Fine announced that they are seeking funding for Psychonauts 2, the sequel to the cult platform/adventure game first released in 2005.

Psychonauts was the debut title of Double Fine Productions after Tim Schafer’s departure from Electronic Arts, and clearly it holds a special place in the studio’s hearts. Despite strong critical praise, it turned out to be a commercial failure; however, fans have been asking for Psychonauts 2 and they finally got their wish.
The crowdfunding campaign has been set up on Fig, the new platform which also allows investments. While the minimum goal is a lofty $3.3M, funding is already at $620K just a few hours after the announcement, which bodes well for the final result; the campaign will end on January 8 and you can also pledge via PayPal.
Here’s a description of Psychonauts 2 from the campaign itself:

In Psychonauts 2, Raz realizes his dream and visits Psychonauts Headquarters. However, when he gets there, he finds it’s not the perfect place he expected and quickly realizes that the Psychonauts need him more than he needs them. Psychonauts 2 will feature a new hub world inside Psychonauts HQ. You’ll access new mental worlds as Raz peeks inside the minds of a host of new characters who need his help to combat their inner demons and unravel their deep-seated emotional issues. Raz will hone his secret agent PSI-abilities—and learn new ones too—using them to solve mysteries and uncover evil plots.
The game will be developed for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a tentative release date of Fall 2018. Check out the pitch video and first short trailer below.

Psychonauts 2 Fig Funding Surpasses $1 Million in Just 14 Hours

Double Fine Productions created some of the most inventive video games ever including Brutal Legend, Costume Quest and Psychonauts. The studio is headed by Tim Schafer, who originally worked for Lucasarts and crafted masterpieces like Grim Fandandgo and The Secret of Monkey Island. Back in February 2012, Double Fine launched a kickstarter with a goal of $400,000 to cover development costs and a documentary for their latest game, Broken Age. Unbelievably, the project ended up amassing $3.45 million within a month and showcased the viability of large kickstarters. However, the development process wasn’t entirely smooth as the studio required more money to complete the game and even launched the first Act via Steam’s Early Access programme.
Schafer clarified that the studio wasn’t asking for any more money from the public and decided make the game even more spectacular through their own funds. This was a fairly controversial move and some backers believed Double Fine didn’t need any public funding in the first place. On another note, various critics were bemused with how quickly the studio spent their entire kickstarter budget. This raised many questions about Double Fine’s management and the amount of money they were paying employees.
Another example, Spacebase DF-9 was pitched on the basis of receiving regular updates to improve the experience over time. Shockingly, Double Fine ceased production in late 2014, and released a final version. Apparently, this was due to the game’s poor sales and Double Fine believed it wasn’t in their best interest to keep funding the project. Evidently, this made many of the project’s backers angry and felt quite betrayed.

    TimOfLegend @TimOfLegend
Double Fine is NOT asking for more money. We are fine, financially. We are using our OWN money to deliver a bigger game than we Kickstarted.

During The Game Awards 2015, Schafer made a huge announcement and unveiled the crowdfunding campaign for Psychonauts 2. Here is the pitch video in full:

In just 14 hours, the project exceeded over $1 million and already well on its way to meet the $3.3 million target. In all honesty, I’m pretty confident this figure is just a baseline and not enough to cover the game’s entire development. It’s definitely going to be partly funded by Double Fine’s own money in combination with the Fig campaign. I’m incredibly excited for Psychonauts 2, but before you rush to back this campaign, just remember the pitfalls of crowdfunding. This is especially important, when you factor in the troubled development of Broken Age which left some people disappointed and Spacebase DF-9.

Psychonauts 2 hits funding goal, to become reality

Continuing its trend of successfully crowd funding its way to its next developmental project, Double Fine has succeeded in generating enough funds from its community of fans to make Psychonauts 2 a reality. Along with the news, Double Fine and its founder Tim Schafer released a video telling us just how excited they are to get started.
Psychonauts 2 is the sequel to one of Double Fine’s most beloved games of yesteryear, originally released for Windows PC, Xbox and PS2. It was the game that had Schafer create his own company in the first place, so it has a special place in the heart of the man and the firm of highly-skilled developers he now leads.

So it’s cause for celebration that Psychonauts 2 has been fully funded, passing its $3.3 million funding goal late lesterday. The campaign still has a few days left to run though, so more funds may trickle in before it’s over. All funds we’re told, will go into making production higher-quality.

The new game will feature the same “stylised, 3D platforming,” action of the original and throw in some humour and unique characters, with many returning from the original game. The story will pick up where the original left off too:
“Raz realizes his dream and visits Psychonauts Headquarters. However, when he gets there, he finds it’s not the perfect place he expected and quickly realizes that the Psychonauts need him more than he needs them,” reads the campaign page.
