    Final Fantasy VII Remake

PSX Final Fantasy VII Remake Trailer Shows Off Exploration and Combat

At PSX today Sony showed off an incredible trailer for the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy VII. The trailer, below, gives a glimpse into the huge graphical enhancements that have been added to the massive city of Midgar. The general art style has been retained, but enhanced drastically.

Final Fantasy VII Remake coming, and it’s not what you expected.

This trailer shows off some new high fidelity footage of Midgar, with combat, exploration and some great cut scenes. The combat looks a lot more like Final Fantasy XV’s, with a strong action vibe. This isn’t just a small remake like the rest of the Final Fantasy’s, this is a true reworking of the entire game.
They also announced that the PC version of Final Fantasy VII (a re-tooling of the original) is now available on the PS4 in the PSN.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Released As “Multi-Part Series”; Aiming For Seamless Active Battle

Square Enix has released a press release, revealing that the Final Fantasy VII Remake will be told across a multi-part series.

During the Playstation Experience, Sony and Square Enix revealed a new trailer for the remake of the 1997 rpg classic. In case you missed it, check out the trailer down below.

Following the release of the CG/Gameplay trailer, Square Enix revealed that the remake of the game, will be told “across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience”.
A small paragraph from the US press release is included below:
During this past weekend’s PlayStation Experience in San Francisco, SQUARE ENIX debuted a new trailer for FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, the full remake of the award-winning role-playing game, FINAL FANTASY VII. The new trailer features the first CG scenes as well as gameplay footage. FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will be told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience.
Final Fantasy VII Remake a multi-part series

Interestingly, a Japanese press release from Square Enix, states that the game will be released in several parts due to the amount of content featured in the game. The Japanese teaser website for ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’ can be checked out right here.
An interview with Dengeki Online, further explains the decision to release the remake as multi-part series.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series. Please tell us more about this decision.
producer Yoshinori Kitase: “The idea that a remake of Final Fantasy VII would not fit into a single release was there from the very beginning. We still can’t share more information about its multiple parts, but please look forward to future announcements.”
director Tetsuya Nomura: “If we dedicated our time to a single release, parts of it would become summarized. We’d have to cut some parts, and additional parts would come in few, so rather than remake the game as a full volume, we decided to do multiple parts.

producer Yoshinori Kitase: “As you can see in the trailer, we showed Sector 1 and Sector 8, but in those areas alone, I think you can see a lot of density. When you’re remaking the entirety of the original version in that quality, it’s not possible to fit it all in one release.”
The trailer showcased during the Playstation Experience, showed off a rather active battle system, and a lot of fans seem to be worried, that the ATB system from the original FFVII will be changed too much.
In the Dengeki Online interview, Nomura asks fans of the game, to “please look forward to how the game will evolve through the remake”.
Being a remake, the game will involve elements like the ATB gauge and limit breaks, but will appear with “new ways to be used”.
What about the elements of the original battle system?
Nomura: “In the end, it’s based on Final Fantasy VII, so elements like the ATB gauge and Limit Breaks will appear with new ways to be used. Please look forward to how this game will evolve through the remake.”
According Kitase and Nomura, they are aiming for a “seamless active battle”, rather than a command-based battle as implemented in the original Final Fantasy VII.
How will the battle system work?
Kitase: “Rather than a command-based battle ensuing when you encounter an enemy, we’re aiming for a seamless active battle, as you can see in the trailer.”
Nomura: “Regarding the battle speed and tempo, for the sake of a stress-free battle, we want to do something on the level of Dissidia Final Fantasy. As far as the degree of action goes, it’s Dissidia Final Fantasy, then Kingdom Hearts, then Final Fantasy VII Remake. There won’t be any actions that require a technique. By using the new system, we want to do action battles while also being able to fight while thinking strategically.”
What are your thoughts on the changes to the game’s battle-system? Do you prefer a time-based system or the ‘new’ active system.
    Thanks, Gematsu for the translations.

Final Fantasy 7: Remake is further along than we realised

When it comes to the Final Fantasy series, Square Enix has a track record of taking its time to get a new game out, with the most obvious example right now being Final Fantasy XV. So when Final Fantasy VII: Remake was announced, many assumed we wouldn’t see the game for several years.
However, it seems that the game may be further along in development than many people realised, according to the game’s director, Yoshinori Kitase, who wrote a blog post for Square Enix, going over the game’s progress and the decision to make the game a ‘multi-part series’.

“With FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, we have the opportunity to go beyond the story, world and experience of FINAL FANTASY VII in ways we’ve always dreamed of – from the depths of Midgar to the skies above the Planet. The multi-part format enables us to expand the original story and turn it into an epic experience for fans and new gamers alike.”
“It was great to see so much excitement when we surprised everyone with the first gameplay footage and it was a treat for us to show that development is going well, and further along than perhaps many had realised”.
The big thing that the development team is pushing for with this remake is scale. Given the advancements we’ve had in technology since 1997, the Final Fantasy Remake team can produce the game on the scope it always dreamed of over the years.

‘Social situation’ spells changes for Final Fantasy VII Remake

The changes that have happened in society over the last twenty years mean that certain scenes in the Final Fantasy VII remake will need to be approached very carefully, it’s been revealed.
In an interview with Japanese blog Hachima Kikou, producer Toshinori Kitase and director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that, among others, the Honey Bee Inn segment could need altering to be enjoyed by a modern audience.
The short interview, spotted by Dualshockers, also revealed a few other interesting segments, including the fact that fan favourite mini-games will definitely be making their return. Presumably, that will include the snowboarding and motorbike games. There’s no mention of the Golden Saucer itself, although it’s safe to guess that the readily accessible mini-games will be housed at everybody’s favourite digital playground.

More forgettable distractions are less likely to make the cut, as the team will need to remake them from scratch for the new title. Sorry little Mog, we hardly knew ye. Considering the mixed feeling towards Fort Condor, that could be another of the mini-games that are either drastically cut down or removed entirely.
Kitase said that the remake wouldn’t be open world, but rather would have a focus on how characters affect the environment. Since he specifically mentioned sandbox, it’s an important distinction to make. It seems unlikely that it will feature western RPG style quests, where side missions are basically interchangable with the main plot, and that’s probably what fans were expecting anyway.
The multi-part series will feature “basically” full voice acting. Those characters that didn’t make an appearance in Advent Children will have to be newly cast.
As for release date, the powerful pair are still keeping their mouths well and truly sealed. More solid information can be expected next year, after the release of Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and World of Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be a trilogy with 90 hours of gameplay

According to the latest issue of Game Informer, Square Enix says that the new Final Fantasy VII Remake will be made up of a trilogy of three game-discs with 30 hours of content each, totally up to 90 hours of gameplay.

The magazine notes that the Square Enix dev team, which consists of the original Final Fantasy VII developers Yoshinori Kitase, Tetsuya Nomura, and Kazushige Nojima, used the three-part Final Fantasy XIII saga as inspiration for the Remake's release structure. As such, each game will be 30+ hours in length, and make up a three-part trilogy.

Kitase, Nomura, and Nojima also say that they feel they have "full liberty" to add or change the content found in the 1997 original, so the Remake could be quite different from the landmark JRPG that changed the history of gaming. Square Enix has already revealed the new action-based combat system for the FFVII Remake, showing a "dramatic change" from the original's Active Time Battle system. We could see major story plots and elements changed or even nixed, but the devs affirm that they still want to make the fans happy--isn't that the whole point of making the FFVII Remake?

In any case, we'll probably see Square Enix show off more of the Final Fantasy VII Remake at E3 2016, along with an official release date. I expect that the game will release in 2017 to coincide with Final Fantasy VII's 30th anniversary, but we still don't know when it'll launch on PS4.

Each Final Fantasy VII Remake Episode Will be as Long as Final Fantasy XIII

Reception was mixed when Square Enix announced that its remake of Final Fantasy VII was to be split into episodes, with some fans accusing the developer of milking the game’s release. However, Final Fantasy VII Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase has revealed that each episode will be the length of a single game, comparing the length of each instalment to Final Fantasy XIII.
“It will essentially be a full-scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In XIII, each installment told the story from a different angle,” Kitase told Game Informer’s Joe Juba (via TechRadar). “It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory in a sense.”
“Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a pre-existing story, so it wouldn’t really make sense if that isn’t encompassed in a multi-part series […] So, if we’re just looking at each of these parts, one part should be on par with the scale of one Final Fantasy XIII game,” Kitase added.
Kitase is a Final Fantasy veteran, having been involved in the franchise since the very first release, plus RPG classic Chrono Trigger.
“I, along with [Tetsuya] Nomura-san and [Kazushige] Nojima-san – who are involved with the remake – were also involved with the original Final Fantasy,” Kitase said. “We were the people who created it, so in that sense, we don’t think anything is untouchable. That isn’t to say we’re changing everything!”
While the release date for the first episode of Final Fantasy VII Remake has not been revealed, it’s a safe bet that more details will be revealed at this Summer’s E3.
