    Fitbit Blaze smartwatch

Fitbit announce Blaze fitness watch, featuring color touchscreen

Fitness watch market leader Fitbit have unveiled their latest offering at CES, the company's first colour touchscreen fitness watch for the most fashion conscious fitness fanatics. The Fitbit blaze will markets worldwide from March and sit between the Fitbit Charge HR and Fitbit Surge models. Unlike the latter model, Blaze will drop the onboard GPS function, but will feature 'connected GPS'; the ability to leverage GPS from a smartphone via Bluetooth.

Despite the addition of a colour screen - a first for the company, battery life is still expected to last around 5 days per charge. While the Blaze undoubtedly shares some of the physical characteristics of it's nearest competitor - the Apple Watch, the truth is Fitbit aren't straying too far from their strengths. Blaze is built from the ground up to be a fitness watch first and foremost and users won't be able to load their own apps. Still, you will be able to trick it out with a slew of accessory bands and other extras which will accompany the launch at retail.

Blaze is now available for pre-order online for $199 USD or $329 AUD.

Fitbit share value continues to plummet following Blaze smartwatch announcement

Fitness tracking specialist Fitbit unveiled its first smartwatch last week ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show. The unassuming device, which Fitbit described as a smart fitness watch, hasn't exactly received the reaction executives were no doubt hoping for.
Since announcing the Fitbit Blaze on January 5, the company's share value has nearly been cut in half. Shares are currently trading south of their initial public offering price of $20 for the first time ever, leading many to wonder what went wrong.
On the surface, there's not much to dislike about the Fitbit Blaze. Its outward appearance is arguably no better or worse than the competition and its five days of promised battery life is rather impressive. Even still, analysts are divided on the subject.
S&P Capital IQ analyst Angelo Zino believes Fitbit should focus on products that cost less than $100 and focus heavily on wellness. An analyst from Leerink Research concurs, viewing the Blaze as a strategic misstep and a style miss with poor sales prospects. Another analyst from the same firm disagrees, seeing the Blaze as an improved fitness band that health-conscious consumers will like.
R.W. Baird noted last week that investors may also be concerned about the lack of updates to existing Fitbit products like the Charge and Charge HR.
Legal issues aren't helping matters, either. Fitbit last week fielded a class-action lawsuit from numerous customers complaining of the inaccuracies of select Fitbit wearables. Specifically, the suit alleges the heart rate monitor within its PurePulse trackers are off by a "very significant" margin.
Fitbit spokesperson Heather Pierce told Bloomberg via e-mail they do not believe the case has merit. Fitbit stands behind its heart rate technology, Pierce said, adding that they plan to vigorously defend the lawsuit.

Fake Fitbit activity trackers intercepted by U.S. customs

Counterfeiter operations are clearly getting increasingly sophisticated, as evidenced by a shipment of fake Fitbit activity trackers from Hong Kong, which looked apparently very close to the genuine article.

According to a press release issued by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection who seized the shipment of counterfeit Fitbit watches, the collection of 350 devices had a street value of around $35,000 USD and were intercepted due to their copyright breaches. Susan Stranieri, CBP Port Director for the Area Port of Philadelphia said "Customs and Border Protection will continue to work closely with our trade and consumer safety partners to identify and seize counterfeit and substandard merchandise, especially those products that pose potential harm to American consumers. Intellectual property rights enforcement is a CBP priority trade issue, and a mission that we take very seriously."

Probably bound for the likes of eBay, prospective Fitbit purchasers would be encouraged to look at legitimate outfits only - they're much better that way.

Fitbit introduces Alta, a stylish new customisable activity tracker

Market leading fitness tracking outfit Fitbit announced a forthcoming new model overnight, dubbed 'Alta', which the company hopes will reinvigorate the low-end of the market.

With a slimmer profile thanks to the use of a new OLED display, and a stylish design which caters for the more fashion-conscious who like to bling their accessories, the Alta will come to market with an array of replacement bands, including a 'stainless steel silver bangle' (and a gold option coming down the line) and looks to be unashamedly marketed at the ladies. Unlike the top-end Fitbit Charge HR and Surge activity trackers, the Alta doesn't feature an in-built heart rate monitor, but does include the usual features such as activity and exercise tracking, alongside sleep monitoring and a new 'reminders to move' nudges to get you up and away from the computer desk, and SMS and call notifications previously only found in the Surge.

The Fitbit Alta is due to hit the market next month for $130 USD and $199 AUD, alongside the new Fitbit Blaze.

Fitbit Used to Save Someone’s Life

People these days like using technology for a wide range of abilities, from playing a game to tracking your morning run. Using technology to track your activities has become a big thing, with smart watches and sports wristbands alike offering the ability to track and monitor your actions, a feature that may have just allowed the Fitbit to save someone’s life.
When he was submitted to the emergency ward of Our Lady of Lourdes Medical center in Camden, doctors were alarmed to discover the 42-year old had an irregular and fast heartbeat. These properties are often those which can trigger a stroke, and could have been chronic or caused by a seizure, if it was chronic, the traditional treatment for the fast heartbeat would have triggered a stroke.
Back in the hospital, the staff noticed the man was wearing nothing other than a Fitbit, a device designed to help track people’s health. In this case, it was the heartbeat monitor that helped inform the doctors that the issue wasn’t chronic, allowing the staff to treat the condition safely knowing that the treatment wouldn’t cause a stroke.
While Fitbits and alternative technologies are often used by doctors to help keep track and monitor long-term health conditions, this is the first time we’ve seen the technology directly used to save someone’s life.
