    Android-Based Remix OS 2.0

Android-Based Remix OS 2.0 Coming As Free Download For PC And Mac

Jide Technology’s Remix OS 2.0 Android-based operating system, which has been carefully optimized for PC use, will be available for download as alpha-stage software on January 12.
This was made possible thanks to the collaboration with the Android-x86 team, which is working on porting Android on as many Intel and AMD-based machines as possible. Android-x86 never really messed around with the interface, though, which means it suffered from the same problems even Google’s latest Pixel C suffers - having an interface that isn’t optimized for desktop use. Remix OS 2.0, on the other hand, is likely the most PC-centric version of Android we’ve seen so far, so the two projects make quite a match.
David Ko, Co-Founder of Jide Technology said: “Today’s public release of Remix OS, based on Android-x86, is something that we’ve been working towards since we founded Jide Technology in 2014. All of us are driven by the goal of making computing a more accessible experience, with this free, public release allowing us to do this. We believe Remix OS is the natural evolution of Android and we’re proud to be at the forefront of this change.”
As it’s only a community project and because the people behind Android-x86 need to make it work on hundreds of hardware configurations out there, it’s still only based on Lollipop. However, Jide said that the Remix OS-flavored Android-x86 OS should be upgraded to Marshmallow soon. Some Marshmallow test images for Android-x86 were already released last month.
According to Jide Technology, there won’t be any need from app developers to modify their apps so they can work on Remix OS 2.0, likely because they’ve found a way to simply wrap phone or tablet apps in “windows,” so the transition from a smartphone to a Remix OS machine shouldn’t be too bad.
It won’t be until Google fully commits to porting Android to PCs that those apps will be fully optimized for this form factor. However, when it launched the material redesign of Android, Google already started encouraging developers toward more “fluid” applications that work well on phones, tablets and even as windows inside ChromeOS. This should help Remix OS and other PC-optimized and Android-based operating systems in the future, as more developers develop their apps in this way.
Jide said that users can also install the Remix OS 2.0 on USB drivers and then use it as a portable device that they can use to carry their data between computers. For instance, in a remote area where there may be only one computer in a whole village, people could keep their own Remix OS on a USB drive and share a PC hardware’s resources to be able to use it.
People interested in trying it out will be able to download for free the alpha-stage OS from Jide.com or Android-x86.org on January 12.

Full Android Desktop OS That Works on Windows and OS X Machines? It’s Here!

Users can run Android apps on their computers using various methods, however, it is hard to find a solution that gives you Android in the right way. While App Runtime for Chrome (ARC) lets you use apps on your computers, it’s only the apps on top of the Mac or Windows interface. A team of ex-Googlers and founders of Jide have introduced Remix OS 2.0 – a full multi-window desktop operating system that runs Android apps on your computer.

Remix OS bringing Android to x86 systems:

With Remix OS, Jide wants to bring Android to your Macs and PCs. Instead of simply working as an application inside a window in your current operating system, Remix OS gives you a similar experience that you get on an Android tablet, replacing Windows or OS X. Giving familiar looks of a desktop, the OS features a Start menu where you can access all the apps, notification tray that you can swipe, task bar, and other such features taken from Android, Windows and Chrome OS.
Remix OS is basically a customized fork of the software that aims to give you a desktop feel (with an ability to right-click!) where you can run apps in fullscreen. Built on Android-x86, Remix OS works on most of the Mac and Windows computers. Jide has also built a Remix Mini device for $70 that can run this operating system on any screen with a HDMI input.

Powered by Remix OS, Remix Mini allows you to work and play with the entire Android app ecosystem while taking full advantage of intuitive PC features such as a taskbar, multiple window multi-tasking, mouse and keyboard support.
However, if you don’t want to buy the device, you can download a system image on a USB stick, or you can create a partition on your computer for a more permanent solution. It comes for free and takes less than two minutes to boot up. Jide has also promised to send OTA updates to improve the Remix OS 2.0 in the future.
Users will be able to download Remix OS on January 12 from jide.com.

Remix OS 2.0 Now Available To Download For PCs And Macs

Just as Jide Technologies promised recently, the Remix OS 2.0 is now available for download for both PCs and Macs. Remix OS is an Android-based operating system built with a PC user interface in mind.
Remix OS merged with the Android-x86 project so it can work on hundreds if not thousands of PC configurations out there, thanks to the driver compatibility work done by the developers from the Android-x86 team. The Remix OS comes with the fresh PC-optimized UI that makes Android-x86 more usable on a desktop machine, much like other PC operating systems.
The current release is still in alpha stage, so there may still be bugs, which is why you're supposed to check the “I’m a developer” button before you are able to download the OS from its page.
Before you try installing the OS on a PC, you need a USB 3.0 flash drive with 8 GB storage or higher that can support write speeds of 20 MB/s and a PC that supports the legacy boot option.
Once you have those, you can follow the instructions here to install it:

    1. Download Remix OS for PC package and then unzip the file.
    2. Insert the flash drive in your PC.
    3. Open the Remix OS USB Tool and follow the instructions to burn the flash drive.
    4. Reboot your PC.
    5. Press F12(PC)/Option(Mac) while booting and enter Boot Menu.
    6. Select "USB Storage Device" as boot option under Legacy Mode.
    7. Select either "Guest Mode" or "Resident Mode" to start Remix OS.

It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to install the Remix OS 2.0 on your PC, and then you can start running Android apps natively on your desktop machine.

Android for desktop fork "Remix OS" gets 32-bit support, OTA updates and more

A company called Jide has been working on a desktop-optimized fork of Android for a little over a year now. After Kickstarting a tablet running its custom software in March 2015 and later following with a small set-top box, the company now plans to release its Remix OS for free for anyone to install and use on an x86 computer.
Remix OS brings PC productivity features such as multiple floating windows, advanced file manager, and true mouse and keyboard support. It has a start menu where users can access installed programs, and a notification tray that swipes in from the side.
The Alpha release of Remix OS was actually released last month, but with the new public Beta coming on March 1, the company is bringing a substantial amount of improvements and bug fixes. Chief among them is adding support for 32-bit machines, which means you’ll be able to repurpose that old laptop or PC to run a productivity-oriented version of Android.
Other new features include a new hard drive installer that allows for dual-booting of Remix OS with your other main operating system, and OTA updates, allowing Jide to release updates that you can download over the internet and install without losing data.

The a wealth of apps available for Android open up the potential of Remix OS in a meaningful way that Chrome OS extensions and apps can’t match at this point. But there’s still one key feature that’s missing from Remix OS for PC: the Google Play Store. The company says it’s currently in talks with Google for certification to have official access to the Google Play Store and Services -- in the meantime you can still sideload them onto your Remix OS device.
Another thing worth keeping in mind is that the user experience varies greatly from app to app depending if they’ve been designed to run only on phones or phones and tablets. If it’s the former apps may not play as well unless you keep the window down to a phone-like shape and size.
Last week we reported on another company that’s working on a solution to repurpose old PCs, only using Chrome OS instead of Android.

Jide Remix OS Entering Beta As Company Matures Focus

It was big news when Jide announced at CES 2016 that the alpha build of its Remix OS, an Android-based operating system, would be free for both PC and Mac, but this week at MWC we got word that the beta version is forthcoming.
Further, in our conversation with company representatives including co-founder David Ko, it became clear to us that Jide has two main types of users in mind for Remix OS: Techies who want to bring new life to old hardware and people in developing nations who lack resources to acquire sufficient computing devices.
We all have an old laptop or ignored tablet floating around the house somewhere. Remix OS provides a lightweight operating system that has the polish and app availability of Android, with some UI tweaks to make it look better on a larger display and with mouse and keyboard input. And because of the work done by the Android-x86 project, Remix OS can run on x86 hardware.
Ko pointed out that when people in developing nations first engage with the Internet, it’s likely on an Android device, so leveraging that ecosystem made sense. Further, in some areas, not everyone can afford a computing device, so multiple people may be taking turns using the same device, whether that’s a family in one household or a whole neighborhood gathering at a local shop to get online. To ensure security, privacy and a more custom experience, you can carry Remix OS on a USB stick, plug it into the communal device, and away you go.
Performance, of course, is key; obviously as an alpha build, Remix OS has its issues, but I was impressed with what I saw it do this week. In a meeting, Ko demonstrated a not-so-new touchscreen laptop running Remix OS. Where one might expect apps running in the background but displaying one at a time, there was a multi-window environment. Ko had as many as five windows open at once, and he was able to click and drag to reorder them around the screen with no lag. I should also note that the UI itself is simple, clean and attractive.
We’ll have to wait until March 1 to see everything the beta has in store, but Ko mentioned a few items that are coming, including OTA updating (meaning you no longer have to download an image to update), support for older 32-bit hardware, and a new UEFI with dual-boot capabilties. Support for more devices and an "advanced" file manager are coming soon, too.
One caveat is that Google Play (both the Store and Services) aren't available, but Google is actually working on that, and in the meantime, you can sideload Google Play Services.

There is yet much work to be done on Remix OS, but the direction Jide is heading and the support it's receiving point to an increased potential for success. Momentum seems to be building.

PC-Optimized Remix OS 2.0 Now Available For Nexus 9, Nexus 10

Remix OS 2.0, the Android-based operating system that has been designed with a PC in mind, launched for the Nexus 9 and Nexus 10.
Android hasn’t been as successful as Google may have liked on tablets, and it’s been even less successful on the notebook and PC form factors. Part of the problem was that Android hasn’t changed its user interface all that much from the smartphone UI, which has made it appear lackluster on bigger screens.
At least for tablets, Google has tried to optimize the UI a little more, but because the company has been slow in doing so, Android tablet sales haven’t been growing significantly. This in turn has led to developers not caring all that much about optimizing their apps for tablets. The problem is worse for PCs, where Google hasn’t optimized the UI at all for that form factor.
One of the things that has been lacking on both tablets and PCs is native multi-window support, for starters, but also a familiar taskbar that can be useful on bigger screens. Remix OS brings both of those features, and it presents the apps and files that are present on your system as a traditional desktop operating system would.
Earlier this year, Jide Technology, the company behind Remix OS, announced that Remix OS and the Android-x86 project have combined forces to bring Remix OS to older x86 PCs. This merger allows more people to experience the Android-based OS on lower-end hardware.
The company now released its OS for the Nexus 9 and Nexus 10 tablets, to give them an experience more similar to that of a PC operating system.
For now, Remix OS 2.0 is still based on Android 5.1.1, which is to be expected. Developing highly customized operating systems such as Remix OS usually means that the company doing it will remain a little behind the main project.
With Android N around the corner, it’s probably not even worth switching to Android M right now. It would be better for Jide to get Remix OS 2.0 out of beta and release a stable build that works on a wide variety of hardware. Then, once Android N is officially out, upgrade Remix OS to it.
Android N is also supposed to come out with multi-window support. Remix OS may be able to take advantage of that feature to better integrate with the AOSP. This could make it easier for apps that are developed for stock Android to work with Remix OS’ own multi-window system and could eliminate potential bugs.
